Upgrade MacBook with SSD
If your old Macbook Pro is getting old, the best way you can do it is to replace the traditional spinning hard drive into a solid drive that gives it a new wind. That's why all MacBooks and most newer laptops sold today use SSDs. They are energy efficient, reliable and quieter than magnetic drives and rotating discs.
I have replaced the Samsung 850 Evo 500GB for the 500GB hard drive of the 2011 MacBook Pro . The whole process does not take an hour (not counting the time to copy MacBook hard drive to SSD for half a day). In fact, the most difficult thing is to install the hard drive in place using the 6T head torx-head screwdriver.
Watch Sharon Profis revive the MacBook Pro 2009 with SSD in the video below:
Prepare
- 2.5-inch SATA SSD (using Samsung 850 Evo)
- SATA to USB transfer cable or dock.
- Small screwdriver used to open the device.
- Torx head screwdriver to disassemble the hard drive.
- SuperDuper software.
Step 1: Prepare SSD
Start connecting SSD with dock tablet or cable. When connected successfully, start Disk Utility (can be found with Spotlight) and select SSD from the left bar. Next, press the Erase button at the top of the window and press Erase. No need to change any settings unless you want to rename. From there, the hard drive will be formatted and prepared for the next step.
Next, boot and install SuperDuper to back up your Mac hard drive to SSD. Then, select Backup All Files and click Copy Now.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending on the volume on the hard drive. When the process is complete, remove the SSD drive and turn off the computer.
Step 2: Move the hard drive
Remove the MacBook's rear cover by twisting the small screws. When removing, place them in a small box to avoid confusion.
When removing the cover, touch the metal to release static electricity. At this point, you should clean the inside of the Mac. You can see a lot of dust is not cleaned over the years. Use a soft brush or balls to clean dust to remove dust.
Use a regular screwdriver to remove the two black screws of the hard drive protection frame to remove the hard drive. Put the protection frame aside after the removal is complete.
And gently lift the hard drive. You will see that a SATA ribbon is attached to one end. Carefully shake the connector (not the ribbon) to disconnect.
Remove 4 torx screws of the hard drive and set aside. At this point, you can store the hard drive or convert it to an external hard drive.
Step 3: Install SSD
Using the SSD and 4 torx screws that were removed earlier gently attached the SATA ribbon to the SSD, insert the hard drive into the same configuration as the original hard drive.
Finally, reattach the rear cover using small screws.
Now, turn on your computer. It may take a few more minutes to get used to the new drive, but to say they will boot much faster than before. You will also notice that programs start up faster, saving files takes less time, .
