Forgot Your Skype Password? Recover the Microsoft Account for Teams Free

Consumer Skype retired in May 2025 and is no longer available. Existing users can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with the same Microsoft account; supported chats and contacts are then available there. Password recovery now uses Microsoft's account-recovery process, not the old Skype temporary-code screens.

Identify the account first

Your sign-in may be an email address, phone number, or older Skype Name linked to a Microsoft account. Search password managers, old Skype emails, Microsoft purchase receipts, and devices where the account is still signed in.

If you forgot the username, open Microsoft's sign-in page, select Sign-in options > Forgot my username, and use a recovery email address or phone number. Microsoft will send a security code and show a masked username hint. See the official username recovery instructions.

Reset the forgotten password

1. Go to Microsoft's account sign-in page and select Forgot password?.
2. Enter the email address, phone number, or Skype Name associated with the account.
3. Choose an available verification method and request a security code.
4. Enter the code on the Microsoft page and create a new, unique password.
5. Sign in to Teams Free with the recovered account.

If you cannot receive a security code

Try Microsoft's sign-in helper first. If the recovery email or phone number is unavailable, complete the Microsoft account recovery form from a familiar device and location. Provide accurate information you know, such as previous passwords, profile details, and Microsoft services used; do not invent answers.

Microsoft documents the form and preparation in its account recovery form help. Support cannot simply disclose or bypass an account password.

Protect the recovered account

• Use a password that is not reused on another site.
• Update recovery email addresses and phone numbers.
• Review recent sign-in activity and remove devices you do not recognize.
• Enable a stronger sign-in method or two-step verification where available.
• Never give a security code to someone claiming to be Microsoft support.

Understand the Skype-to-Teams limits

Microsoft says most chats and contacts become available in Teams Free when you sign in with the Skype credentials, but some categories do not migrate, including certain private conversations and chats with work or school accounts. Do not assume every historical item will appear.
