Features of Microsoft Excel Viewer
A simple program
Microsoft Office is arguably the most popular software suite right now, and most businesses use Microsoft Excel to create spreadsheets every day.
However, the Office suite is expensive, so, fortunately, there is a way to view Excel files without paying, configuring and setting up the application.
With Microsoft Excel Viewer, you can open, view and print Excel files for free. Since this is an official application developed by Microsoft to make it easy for everyone to handle spreadsheets, it is guaranteed to be safe.
Note that Microsoft will suggest installing additional software during the installation of Microsoft Excel Viewer. Check the policy before you agree to anything.
What can you do with Microsoft Excel Viewer?
The program has a simple interface that allows you to open and read spreadsheets with a few clicks. All you need to do is open the program, find the file you want to view and open it.
Unfortunately, however, you cannot edit or change the document in any way using this software. You also cannot create new spreadsheets or save or just print them.
However, since its functions are so basic this app is super light. The hardware resources it uses are quite low. The program will not slow down your system and works with any version of Excel.
User interface
Microsoft Excel Viewer uses the official program ribbon design, so it feels like you're using Excel itself. When launching the app, you will be very easy to grasp and use.
There is a dedicated tool to print Excel files in the app. It includes a set page, all with margins, page orientation, etc. as well as a preview window. It is also possible to copy a certain amount of text or define a small print area.
Alternatives to meet your needs
In theory, Microsoft Excel Viewer is super handy. However, it limits you a lot and there are other alternatives to consider.
For example, you can use OneDrive, Microsoft's cloud storage solution. It comes with the Excel Web App feature that opens the spreadsheet through a browser and allows you to edit files.
Google Spreadsheets is another option that allows you to import and export Excel spreadsheets quickly and easily. You can access Google Spreadsheets, as long as you have a Google account.
Zoho Sheet is another method of accessing spreadsheets through a web browser using a URL or uploading directly from a computer. Finally, if you want to view and edit documents offline, OpenOffice is an excellent open source alternative.
Additional features and some problems
You can view the latest versions of Excel Workbooks with this program, but the latest features won't be visible.
Viewer supports all file formats from Excel. You can only download 32-bit version of the application, but it also works on 64-bit operating system. However, you cannot run macros using the program, although you can open Macro-enabled files.
As for thumbnail charts, you won't be able to see them in the Viewer, but only empty cells where they are located.
When it comes to slicers, they don't show any data in the Viewer. You will only see an error message.
So, in general, Microsoft Excel Viewer includes all the essential Excel features, but not enough for more complex spreadsheets.
Privacy
Since Microsoft Excel Viewer comes directly from Microsoft, the same Microsoft privacy policy applies to this program.
According to Microsoft's official statement, this program, like all other programs, only collects your data to improve your experience and never sells it to a third party. Furthermore, they encrypt all of your files for privacy.
Too many restrictions
Microsoft Excel Viewer is a useful tool to have if you are not an Excel user and want to view spreadsheets. However, there are many alternatives that give you a significantly better level of control over the files you're viewing, even without a Microsoft Office suite.
