How to Stop YouTube Videos from Buffering

Reduce YouTube buffering by adjusting video quality, testing connection stability, checking Wi-Fi and browser performance, and avoiding obsolete extensions or DNS myths.

If YouTube keeps buffering, lower the video quality first, then test the connection and browser. Modern YouTube already uses HTML5 adaptive streaming, so old “smart buffer” extensions and Flash-player tweaks are unnecessary and can create privacy or compatibility problems.

Quick fixes in order

  1. Lower playback quality. In the player, select the gear icon > Quality and try 720p, 480p, or Auto. Higher resolution and frame rate require more sustained bandwidth.
  2. Pause briefly. Let the buffer build for several seconds, then resume. This helps on connections with short speed drops.
  3. Reload the video. If only one tab or video is stuck, refresh the page or close and reopen the YouTube app.
  4. Stop other heavy traffic. Pause cloud backups, game downloads, software updates, and high-resolution streams on other devices.
  5. Restart the connection. Reconnect Wi-Fi or restart the router if several devices are slow. Wait for the router to finish booting before retesting.

Choose a lower default quality on mobile

In the YouTube app, open your profile picture > Settings > Video quality preferences. Choose Auto for adaptive quality or Data saver when mobile data or Wi-Fi is slow. You can set separate preferences for mobile networks and Wi-Fi.

Find out whether the problem is YouTube or the connection

  • Play a different YouTube video. One newly uploaded video may still be processing higher-quality versions.

  • Try the same video on another device connected to the same network.
  • Switch temporarily between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or use Ethernet where available.

A single speed-test result is not proof of a stable connection. Video can still buffer because of packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, or speed that varies over time.

Use “Stats for nerds” on a computer

Right-click the YouTube player and select Stats for nerds. Useful fields include:

  • Connection speed: YouTube's estimate for the current stream, not the ISP's advertised plan.
  • Buffer health: Roughly how much video is ready ahead of playback.
  • Dropped frames: A high count can indicate rendering or hardware-decoding trouble rather than network buffering.
  • Current/optimal resolution: Shows whether playback quality exceeds what the player size or connection needs.

If buffer health repeatedly reaches zero, test the network. If buffer health is healthy but the video stutters and dropped frames climb, focus on the browser, graphics driver, or device performance.

Fix Wi-Fi bottlenecks

  • Move closer to the router and reduce obstacles.
  • Use 5GHz or 6GHz Wi-Fi when nearby and supported; use 2.4GHz for longer range when the faster bands are weak.
  • Try a less congested channel or the router's automatic channel selection.
  • Connect the streaming device by Ethernet to compare.

Browser troubleshooting

  1. Update the browser and restart it.
  2. Open the video in a private/incognito window. If it works there, an extension or stored site data may be involved.
  3. Disable ad blockers, video enhancers, VPN extensions, and other add-ons one at a time for testing. Do not install a buffer extension recommended by an old tutorial.
  4. Clear YouTube site data only if sign-in or playback state appears corrupted; expect to sign in again.
  5. Test hardware acceleration both enabled and disabled, restarting the browser after the change. Keep whichever setting reduces dropped frames and visual glitches on that device.

YouTube app and device checks

  • Update the YouTube app and the device operating system.
  • Force-close and reopen the app, then restart the device.
  • Turn off battery or data restrictions temporarily for a test; restore them afterward if they are not the cause.

  • On a smart TV, streaming stick, or console, restart both the device and YouTube app and test another network if possible.

What usually does not help

  • “Enable HTML5” pages: YouTube has used HTML5 playback for years; Flash is obsolete.
  • SmartVideo or similar abandoned extensions: They can no longer control YouTube's current player reliably and may access browsing data.
  • Changing DNS to increase bandwidth: DNS can affect how quickly a hostname is resolved, but it does not increase the connection's download capacity. A different DNS resolver may help only in specific routing or resolution failures.
  • Clearing every browser setting: Start with a private window and extension test to avoid unnecessary data loss.
  • Downloading videos from unofficial sites: These services can violate terms, expose users to deceptive ads, or deliver unwanted files.

When to contact the provider

Contact the internet provider when multiple devices buffer across services, wired and wireless tests are slow, the connection drops repeatedly, or results are far below the subscribed service over several tests.
