Google Drive Supports Video Analytics with Gemini

Google's popular cloud storage service, Google Drive, is getting a very interesting AI feature based on the Gemini artificial intelligence model. Workspace customers can now tap into the video analysis capabilities of Google's generative AI chatbot.

This AI chatbot now has the ability to summarize YouTube videos. Google has also launched the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, which has a major upgrade in video understanding and scored 84.8% on the VideoMME benchmark.

With the latest update to Google Drive, users can use the Gemini side panel with uploaded videos to get summaries and ask questions about the content. The Gemini side panel was added to Drive last year and allows users to summarize long documents or entire folders. You can discuss topics, quickly retrieve information, or create new Google files/folders.

When watching a video uploaded to Google Drive, you can click the 'Ask Gemini' button in the top right corner of the screen to use the new feature. You can give natural language commands (currently only available in English) such as:

1. "Summarize this video"
2. "What are the highlights from this announcement video?"
3. "List action items from this meeting recording"

This could save time that would otherwise be wasted rewinding videos to take notes. Google says the feature is available through the Google Drive overlay previewer or the standalone file viewer in a new browser tab.

Google has begun rolling out the feature, which will take several weeks to complete. The new feature is expected to be available across various Workspace plans, including:

1. Business Standard/Plus
2. Enterprise Standard/Plus
3. Google AI Premium
4. Users who purchased the Gemini add-on

Note: Gemini video analytics only works if the Workspace admin has enabled captions for videos in their domain. This is the latest addition to the growing list of AI features in Google Drive,
