Fix Google Chrome Helper on Mac using RAM and CPU
The number of users affected with this issue is increasing day by day, of course they want to find a quick way to solve this problem. While a lot of websites have shown how to fix this from 2019, it doesn't seem to be very effective.
Unfortunately, the Chrome Help support center doesn't explain what the 'helper' is and why it is eating up so much Mac memory.
If you have tried running all the fixes to disable Google Chrome Helper but the problem persists, stay tuned to the article below.
What is Google Chrome Helper?
So what is the Google Chrome Helper (renderer) that makes the cooling fan on the Mac roar and raise the temperature of the MacBook Pro or Mac mini?
Chrome Helper is the name of an embedded content that runs outside of the browser. Plugins are not supported by Chrome when they pull data from elsewhere, for example flash HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The Google Chrome Helper serves as a bridge between this embed code and a remote server.
You'll consume 100% of the CPU and memory on your Mac when you have a fake extension or plugin settings configured by default to run all of Google Chrome.
Fortunately, there is a quick and easy workaround that can disable Google Chrome Helper and effectively reduce memory consumption (from 100% to 20%).
How to disable Google Chrome Helper on Mac
Sure you can turn off Google Chrome Helper but after doing so, another headache will occur every time you want to track a flash content. You will have to join in to see content.vtdecoderxpcservice.
As stated earlier, you only see this progress in Activity Monitor. So in order to stop running Google Chrome Helper, you will have to dig a little deeper into the web browser's settings.
There are two ways to disable the Chrome Helper process:
The first way
If you do not want to take too much time, please copy this link to the Omnibox bar on your Chrome.
chrome://settings/content/unsandboxedPlugins
India Enter and install Chrome plugin will instantly appear in front of you.
You will see the option 'Ask when a site wants to use plug-in to access your computer' turned on. Turn off that option to ' Do not allow any site to use a plug-in to access your computer' .
The second way
- Open Google Chrome on Mac or PC.
- Click on the horizontal three dots on the right corner.
- Click on Settings .
- Select Advanced in the menu on the left.
- Select Privacy and security from the submenu.
- Under Privacy and security, select Site Settings .
- Scroll down to check the Unsandboxed plugin access box .
One huge benefit of deleting all Google Chrome Helper processes is that it prevents Flash ads from automatically loading without having to install another ad blocking extension.
How can Google Chrome Helper not consume much CPU anymore?
Chrome or any other web browser is a problem with any operating system. Flash content makes web browsers run slower on both PC and Mac.
There is no way to completely uninstall flash content on the device, they are already embedded with Chrome, so preventing them from automatically running is the best option.
Another reason why Google Chrome Helper consumes so much CPU and memory is because the plugins and extensions do not function properly.
The main reason is the structure of a website to take up too much Chrome on Mac. If you open an old web page, the browser won't feel any pressure when rendering the JavaScript language.
So when visiting a heavy structured website, block all the abusive ads, profile and track users like most domains are using today. Install ad blocking tools.
Second, avoid badly designed sites that include overuse of JavaScript, cumbersome CSS, sites with lots of link requests, and lots of media elements.
To lighten the resource usage of a web browser, you need:
- Reduce the number of web browser extensions.
- Block ads.
- Only allow JavaScript when on required sites.
- Don't turn autoplay on anything.
The above are ways that can help you fix the error that Google Chrome Helper is eating up RAM and CPU. Good luck.
