Does the phone really charge faster when in airplane mode?
The worst thing about owning a smartphone that opens up to a fascinating digital world is having to put it down for hours to charge. While new phone models often promise higher battery capacity and fast charging, people still want to figure out how to charge their phones even faster. You've probably also heard somewhere that the most common way to fast charge your phone is to switch to airplane mode. So is that correct?
What does airplane mode do?
Smartphones are like computers. Just because the screen is off and you're not using it to play music doesn't mean it doesn't consume power. One of the background processes that drains your phone's battery is searching for radio and WiFi signals.
Switching to airplane mode disables all wireless signals. The phone is no longer receiving and sending wireless signals.
But does this make charging faster? Of course yes. The less power your phone consumes, the faster it will charge. But this is only true when a lot of power is spent on radio and wireless signals. Therefore, this is not always the case.
A study that examined the power consumption of various components on the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Beam found that WiFi and GPS consumed 18.1% and 13.7% of the device's battery, respectively. On the other hand, airplane mode consumes only 1.1% when enabled.
The final difference is determined by the quality and age of the battery as well as the brand and model of the smartphone. You can check your phone's power consumption by going to Settings > Advanced Settings > Battery Manager > Consumption level.
Airplane mode does make the phone charge faster, but how much faster depends on the phone
Does airplane mode make the phone charge faster?
Faster charging is always a plus, especially when you're in a hurry. But while it's true that airplane mode allows your phone to charge faster, how much time you save depends on your phone.
You should conduct a home test to see how airplane mode works for your phone. You can then determine if faster charging is worth the trade-off of not receiving calls, texts, emails, or notifications.
