Chrome 79 has added a warning for stolen passwords
Google has just released an updated version of Chrome 79 browser with a number of new features to help keep users safe online.
The most notable new feature in the updated version of Chrome 79 browser is warning users if their names and passwords are stolen due to data breaches. For the first time, Google has integrated a password warning feature directly into Chrome to provide alerts when users log in to websites.
Users can access in the sync settings of Chrome browser to enable this new feature. Go to Settings -> People -> Sync & Google Services -> find and turn on the option "Warn you if passwords are exposed in a data breach".
If you are not yet on Google experience, you will not be able to find this text. Once there, copy and paste chrome: // flags in the address bar, then press Enter -> find the word "password leak" -> select Enable -> restart the browser. Finally, you access the Settings as above and turn on this new feature to use offline.
In addition to password alerts, Google also added real-time protection to Chrome on desktop computers to increase protection against online scams. Specifically, the browser will issue a warning when a user accesses to a phishing site based on an updated list of phishing sites every 30 minutes. According to Google, this new real-time protection feature can alert users about 30% higher potential threats.
To enable real-time phishing protection, go to Settings -> select People -> Select Sync and Google Services -> enable Make searches and browsing better.
The Chrome interface is also adapted so that users can easily see if they have saved their credentials on another profile or on a shared computer. The login indicator briefly shows the name of the person associated with the user's account, which is located to the right of the address bar. Google also redesigned menu items to make it easy to switch between accounts.
Google will launch Chrome 79 with all of these useful features coming over the next few weeks for desktop versions.
