Users are less likely to sell their old iPads after upgrading
A recently revealed report published by analytics company CIRP shows that people who have recently upgraded their iPads tend to keep their old iPads longer because they will immediately think about transferring them, or even Sell your old device first to get the budget to buy a new one.
This is the conclusion from a study lasting from March 2023 to March 2024, with specific numbers showing that about 67% of new iPad buyers still keep their old iPad.
That is, instead of selling to a third party or participating in trade-in programs, about two-thirds of iPad buyers decide to keep their old devices as secondary devices or give them to friends and family. Also according to CIRP's report, only 3% of iPad owners exchange their old devices and 6% decide to sell the device.
When compared with iPhone, the company found that about 41% of new iPhone buyers gave their old iPhone to friends/family, or kept it after buying a new device. The number of people who want to use their old iPhone as part of a trade-in is significantly higher than for an iPad, at 42%. Meanwhile, only about 5% of users want to make some cash by selling their old iPhone.
Experts say the difference in how users handle their old iPads and iPhones "suggests that the secondary market for used iPads is much smaller and less bustling than that of iPhones." Or simply that users feel that keeping an old iPad brings more value than selling it."
Another notable point of the survey is the difference in the percentage of users who want to report their device as lost, stolen or broken and have to buy a replacement. This percentage of iPad owners is 23%, compared to only 6% of iPhone owners.
Other objective factors such as the stickiness of the Apple ecosystem are often considered motivations for users to continue owning Apple devices for many years. However, CIRP notes that Apple's general policy is still to want users to buy the "latest and greatest iPad."
