LG Display recently introduced a 12-inch screen that can extend to 14 inches, and return to 12-inch size without being damaged. This new screen from LG opens up applications for flexible stretchable screens.

LG calls this a 'free-form' screen because it can be bent easily to fit complex shapes and stretch to make it more comfortable to carry. This stretchable screen is quite high quality with a pixel density of 100ppi, similar to a 40-inch 4K TV and can display full RGB color.

LG's stretchable display is created on a special silicon substrate commonly used for contact lenses, the smaller 40µm LEDs are connected via S-shaped springs instead of straight wires allowing it to Can stretch 20% without breaking.

LG is not the first company to develop and introduce stretchable screens. Last year, a little-known manufacturer, Royole, introduced a screen that could be stretched by 30% and could reach a pixel density of 120ppi. But, the company's demo screen version is only 2.7 inches in size with a resolution of 96 x 60px.

In 2017, Samsung also introduced a stretchable display, which can survive deformation and can stretch about half an inch.
