Keep the paper smooth
TROUBLESHOOTING: The old inkjet printer is often jammed, whether using ordinary paper or photo paper. So that print must be thrown away.
RESOLUTION: When printing to prevent paper jams, make sure the print media is in the correct tray, the paper must be of the same type and the same quantity. Common types of A4 sized paper are 210x297mm and GSM quantitative 70g / m (grams per square meter), usually written on paper packages. You should be careful not to confuse photo paper, plain paper and cardboard with each other, always keep the paper straight, no wrinkles or folds. If your printer has a paper feed tray vertically and you don't print often, swipe the paper so it doesn't curl when in the tray. You can also use a compressed air bottle (usually available at home electronics stores) to blow dust inside the printer. When the paper is jammed, gently remove any pieces of paper that is still stuck in the coil (roller) inside the machine. You can also spray some glass cleaner on a sheet of paper (don't completely wet) and press the paper feed button to let the paper go through the printer several times. Then, repeat several times with normal dry paper to avoid moisture remaining in the printer's coil.
If there are still problems related to the printer, please go to www.fixyourownprinter.com. Here will give you many other tips on laser printers. Another site that is quite useful is Printertechs.com.
Remove cables
TROUBLESHOOTING: Since there are MP3 players, digital cameras, PDAs and other USB devices, on the desk are full of USB cables, so confusing!
RESOLUTION: GoldX has a great solution, which is a USB QuickConnect 5 in 1 cable. This cable has 5 convertible connectors. For example, to attach an external hard drive, you do not have to remove the MP3 player, with this cable, you just need to change the head of the USB cable. This cable can also connect PDA directly to the printer. For more, you can go to find.pcworld.com/43518. Hopefully, this product or similar products may appear in Vietnam market.
Gentle backup
Figure 2:Remove the adapters thanks to GoldX's PowerCore DC Hub
TROUBLESHOOTING: Although the office intranet can meet your requirements well, to back up data in case using a USB external hard drive goes to each machine it is very annoying. Of course, you don't want to be expensive to equip a small office file server.
RESOLUTION: Instead of having a server, you can buy Linksys Network Storage Link device (Figure 1) and mount the drive there. This device can connect to wired and wireless routers. People on the network can access this device for quick and easy backup. Note: during installation, Storage Link needs to reformat the USB external hard drive it connects to, so make sure you back up the data on the external hard drive first. For more details, go to find.pcworld.com/43516.
Lighter with power
TROUBLESHOOTING: The devices that come with the PC are great, but each device comes with an adapter that has the same size as a card brick and if under the desk is countless bricks, it's not neat Come on.
RESOLUTION: Also from GoldX, PowerCore DC Hub (find.pcworld.com/43522, Figure 2) will allow you to connect up to 5 different types of electronic devices that they needed to have their own AC adapters before. You can run a 12V device simultaneously, a 9V and three 5V devices. This is the ideal solution for simultaneous power supply for many different devices. Unfortunately, you need to add the PowerCore System Base Unit for $ 30 as a voltage stabilizer to power the hub. If the device cannot be found, many consumer electronics stores also sell transformer equipment from 220V AC to DC (DC) with different voltages.
Screen complain
TROUBLE: My 17 "CRT monitor bought 6 years ago now makes noise again. Again annoying!
RESOLUTION: This noise is caused by an unstable power supply, an unstable transformer. You can solve it by adjusting the screen scan frequency. Right-click the desktop and select Properties, Settings, Advanced. In Windows 98 and Me, click the Adapter tab and change the scan frequency under 'Refresh rate' to 72 Hz or higher (the higher this parameter, the less you will get eye strain). In Windows 2000 and XP, click the Monitor tab and change this indicator under 'Screen refresh rate' (Windows XP, Figure 3) or 'Refresh frequency' (in Windows 2000).
Another option is to use 'violence': tap hard on the side of the screen. This can end noise, though only temporarily. You should be aware that it is more expensive to bring the screen to fix for a long time than to buy a new monitor. Of course this may be the best way before you replace your barren screen.
CD burner at hot, cold time
Figure 3: Change the scan frequency in Display Setting to remove the sound in the display
TROUBLESHOOTING: The external CD burner via the FireWire port connecting to the PC with a USB / FireWire card attached to the PC works well, but sometimes the computer is not recognized.
RESOLUTION: Try restarting the computer and re-attaching the cable to another FireWire port, however, this is sometimes detected by the OS and sometimes not. Try removing the FireWire card on the motherboard and re-attaching it to another PCI slot (don't attach it to the PCI slot near the AGP slot, as it may cause conflicts in the motherboard). And you should also check your PC's manual to make sure you're using a 'master-slot'.
Correct the screen straight
TROUBLESHOOTING: Sometimes your loved one keeps complaining why the screen image is slightly tilted. Sometimes you wish they were a bit computer-friendly.
RESOLUTION: Just adjust the on-screen adjustment buttons. Each screen has a different set of buttons but the basic functions are the same. Most screens when 'crumpled up' have an incorrect border and you have to adjust the vertical and horizontal borders to fill the screen.Note the above problems apply only to CRT monitors, not to LCDs.
Just one click to get to Device Manager
BLOCKING SPAM
One way to block spam without using another tool is to use the right tool within the e-mail management application. In Outlook Express, go to the Message Rule section to sort mail. This way will not lose your important messages in the spam. You can refer to the article 'Mastering your mailbox' (PCWVN series A No. 6/2001, page 58) for more information on mailbox management.
TROUBLESHOOTING: You often open utilities in Windows' System Properties, but clicking multiple times is a waste of time. Also, if you want to go to Control Panel, we usually right-click My Computer and select Properties, Hardware.Device Manager. But that too must go through too many operations.
RESOLUTION: We can create a shortcut on the desktop that leads to System Properties. To do this, right-click the desktop and select New, Shortcut. In Windows 2000 and XP, type devmgmt.msc in the Location field. In Windows 98 and Me, type c: windowscontrol.exe sysdm.cpl, system, 1 in the 'Command Line' field. (Note that this path points to the file control.exe which is usually located in the Windows directory, which may be located elsewhere). Click Next, type the shortcut name (such as Hardware) and click Finish.
Restore Quick Launch shortcut
TROUBLESHOOTING: You accidentally delete the Show Desktop icon in the Quick Launch toolbar. Worse, while trying to recover this toolbar, you accidentally lost the clock icon in the system tray.
RESOLUTION: Sometimes, because of negligence, we have to cast ourselves into the body, but fortunately there are still two medicines to recover. To show the clock again, right-click on the taskbar and select Properties. In Windows XP, select Show the clock under the 'Notification area' section on the Taskbar tab and click OK. In Windows 98, Me and 2000, select Show clock on the General tab and click OK.
To retrieve the Show desktop icon, you can use a very good free tool called Restore Missing Show Desktop Icon to Quick Launch written by Doug Knox. Go to www.pcworld.com.vn, ID: 43254 to download. After extracting and installing the program, you run it to recover the icon. Now you can casually disrupt the PC settings freely without fear.
Unable to defrag the hard drive
Figure 4: To ensure defragmentation of the hard drive successfully, turn off the Windows indexing feature
TROUBLESHOOTING: Whenever I try to defragment a hard drive on a PC running Windows 98, the Disk Defragmenter tool runs up to 3% and automatically restarts the computer. This happens even when I close all applications and turn off antivirus, firewall, and background programs.
RESOLUTION: A certain program running in the background is interfering with the process of defragmenting the hard drive, which may be the index function of Windows. This index function is considered to make Windows search faster but in fact it is difficult to notice the difference. To turn off indexing in Windows 98 and Me, click Start, Run, type msconfig and press. If you see FastFind then uncheck it. In Windows XP, right-click the C: drive in My Computer or in any Explorer window, select Properties.General and uncheck Allow indexing service to index this disk for fast searching file (see Figure 4). Repeat these steps for the remaining hard drive partitions.
Blow up the big icons
TROUBLESHOOTING: I set up a 21 '' screen at 1152x864 pixel resolution to view larger applications. Images are as expected but desktop icons and fonts are still small.
RESOLUTION: Resizing icons on the desktop can also change their location on the desktop. So before you do anything, go to www.pcworld.com.vn, ID: 43562 and download the free Save My Desktop utility. Install and run the program. Now you can resize the icons, right-click the desktop and select Properties.Appearance (later, in Windows click Advanced). Select Icon from the 'Item' menu to scroll down and increase the number of pixels under 'Size'. However, remember that many icons will blur when you enlarge them. A better way to upgrade your icon profile is to use BestView's free tool (www.pcworld.com.vn, ID: 43564) to set up icons at normal, large and extremely large levels. When downloading, the program may require you to install ActiveX.
Also, to make icons in Quick Launch bigger, right-click on this toolbar, make sure not to select 'Lock the taskbar', then select View.Large Icons.Interesting!
Return Internet Explorer to me
TROUBLESHOOTING: I tried a new browser, didn't like it and removed it. But after uninstalling when I clicked on a link in e-mail, another browser tried to open it instead of Internet Explorer as before.
RESOLUTION: To reset IE as the default browser, open the program and click Tools.Internet Options.Select the Programs tab and select Internet Explorer should check whether it is the default browser near the end (see Figure 5).If another utility prevents IE from being the default browser, you can also download Jem Berkes' free SetBrowser software to interfere with the Registry.(www.pcworld.com.vn, ID: 43926)
Reveal the Back button in IE
TROUBLESHOOTING: I sometimes use IE to browse the web and when I press the Back or Backspace button, IE does not return to the previous site. Instead, it came back to the same website I was browsing. What happened?
RESOLUTION: There are several websites that use the redirect tool the way you press the Back button will take you into the loop between the page you are going to and the page you are trying to exit. To resolve this, click the downward-facing arrow next to the Back button to display the 10 most recent websites you have visited. Another way is to press the Back button 2 times in a row to exit the loop above.
Unsubscribe
TROUBLESHOOTING: It is very frustrating that every time a website comes up, it is required to register and provide personal information! In addition to disclosing information, it is very time consuming for us to register.
RESOLUTION: Many people use fake personal information to fill out these forms. Another way is to go to www.bugmenot.com, this is a neat website, offering a database of accounts including passwords and user ID numbers, allowing you to access websites that require posting Sign without needing to re-register.
Leave no missed calls
TROUBLESHOOTING: When I use a dial-up modem, if anyone calls me, I always receive a busy phone signal.
RESOLUTION: With the free tool BuzMe (www.buzme.com), your caller will hear your voice pre-recorded. On your PC screen, you will see a dialog box telling you that you are on a call. You can then type in a short reply and the caller will hear your answer through the software's voice, or you can send a voice message, reject the call or pick up the phone to speak. things like normal. Buzme requires you to register for a call-forwarding service.
Zoom in in Word and Excel
TROUBLESHOOTING : I usually open a person's Word document to set the font size to 10 on his 15 '' CRT screen. And on my LCD screen, the font is very small. When he opens Word documents from PCs with LCD screens, the font displayed is too big.
RESOLUTION: On the Standard toolbar in Word and Excel there is a Zoom box with percentage settings. You just need to increase or decrease this indicator when you see the font is not suitable for your vision. It is better to hold down the button and use the scroll button (zoom in) or scroll down (zoom out). These ways do not change the font size. Remember that if the above doesn't work, you should upgrade the mouse driver, for some drivers you have to change a certain option. If you don't have a mouse with a scroll button, then read the Windows Magnifier tool in the article 'Use Magnifier to enlarge the view area' (TGVT - PCWVN A No. 5/2004, page 115).
Spam and newsletter (newsletter)
TROUBLESHOOTING: I use every trick to fight spam but it is too successful! Until now, the information, newsletter was very good and valid, I could not reach my mailbox.
RESOLUTION: You add each newsletter address to the list to receive the filter's white list.If you have a recent e-mail of that address, you can easily put it in this list.If not, go to the newsletter website to get the sender's address back.In many web-based e-mail services, clicking the 'Not spam' button usually resolves. If you don't receive a letter, you'll have to add that newsletter address yourself. In MSN Hotmail, click Mail.Options (in the far right corner) and then select Junk E-Mail Protection.Safe List.In Yahoo Mail, click Mail Options (on the right), select Filters.Add and type in the address for the newsletter on the top row labeled 'From Header'.In the 'Move the message to' drop-down list, select Inbox. In AOL 9, open the newsletter and click Add Address, it will add this address to your 'People I Know' list.

Annoyed with keys in Excel
TROUBLESHOOTING: Whenever using Excel, the way keys work often causes problems. Although I want to press it, the cursor will go to the next cell to the right, where it goes down the line again.
RESOLUTION: You can move the cursor in the cell pointing to a place you want: left, right, top, bottom or even standing still doesn't go anywhere. To change key settings in Excel, click Tools.Options.Edit and select the direction from the drop-down menu. Or uncheck 'Move selection after Enter' to keep the cursor still when you press.
Acronyms
TROUBLESHOOTING: I can read most English texts but sometimes I have to surrender unsuspecting acronyms
RESOLUTION: FWIW (short for 'for what it's worth') or IMHO (in my humble opinion), go to Acronym Finder (www.acronymfinder.com) to see the richness and abundance of acronyms it gives you.
Delete quotes in e-mail
TROUBLESHOOTING: I don't know why the received e-mails have quotes before each line. To be honest, there are some messages with more quotes than words.
RESOLUTION: Some e-mail programs automatically insert a double quotation mark at the beginning of each line of the original text when you forward (reply) or reply to that email. Each time a text is sent in the above two ways, each time there is an additional layer of quotation marks. To remove this quotation mark in Outlook Express, click Tool.Options.Send.Under 'Mail sending format', select Plain Text Settings and uncheck 'Indent the original text with> when replying or forwarding'.In Outlook, click Tool.Options.Preferences.E-Mail Options and under 'On replies and forwards', change both fields to 'Prefix each line of the original message' (see Figure 6).In Eudora 5 and 6, restore it: go to Eudora's technical support page (see www.pcworld.com/43814) and scroll down, click to open the Change Option dialog box in Eudora.Make sure the 'New value' field is blank and click OK.Repeat the above step for application.
Backup source for Palm
TROUBLE: I really like to use Palm PDA. It's not a problem to be in the PDA office, but when I go out, I have to carry the charger for it all the time, it's annoying.
RESOLUTION: The most passive way is to reduce the screen brightness to extend battery life. But you can also buy an additional cable (as shown in Figure 7) to connect to an adapter directly to the Palm machine. You can also find a portable battery charger (currently our country market is difficult to find these devices).
Manage files and batteries in Pocket PC
TROUBLESHOOTING: The way to solve problems for Palm users, how about Pocket PC users? You will encounter 2 obstacles. Microsoft hides the battery status display in the Settings.System.Power folder, forcing you to press up to 3 steps to see the current battery status. Like Windows, the Pocket PC platform doesn't have an effective file management tool, but you still have to work with the File Explorer tool to manage files.
RESOLUTION: First, go to find.pcworld.com/43606 to download the Battery Pack Pro trial version of Omega One.This $ 20 tool not only displays the battery status bar but also measures the remaining battery life for you.Next, replace File Explorer file management utility with Explorer 2003 for 25 USD from Resco very well. This tool lets you move files in a simple window and let you find, compress and decompress files easily. The trial version is available at: www.worldworld.com/43608.
Who replaces RealPlayer
TROUBLESHOOTING: RealNetworks' RealPlayer music player creates too many icons on the desktop and it often asks if I change music file links. RealPlayer also displays many pop-up windows. And the firewall often tells me that the RealPlayer is trying to call somewhere.
RESOLUTION: It is very easy to be annoyed with RealPlayer and Apple's QuickTime movie viewer. Why don't you replace them with a music player, watch something smaller but also have the same features.First, uninstall RealPlayer and QuickTime through the Add or Remove Programs applet in Windows Control Panel. Then go to www.pcworld.com.vn, ID: 43610 to download Real Alternative
GOOD AND BAD
WE WILL HAVE ANY COMPLIANCE COMMENT when used through 2 hardware or software, there are things we can only shake our heads. Here are 3 design products that are considered appropriate and the other 3 products are the opposite.
MP3 player case: IRiver IHP-200 allows you to adjust it even when the device is on the case, but the Apple IPod when worn on the cover is not adjustable.
Change the font in the browser with the scroll button: Opera enlarges both images and text while Internet Explorer only zooms in on the text, and the image is still the same size so the site doesn't look harmonized with the design.
USB port: the left system has a USB port on the front of the chassis that is better designed, more flexible because there are audio outputs for the case with only the front USB port.
In order to play RealAudio and RealMedia files and have plug-ins for Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape and Mozilla, you can listen to music and watch movies directly from the website (also Quicktime Alternative). You can go to find.pcworld.com/43816 for more information.
Goodbye Autoplay
TROUBLESHOOTING: One day, I inserted the music CD into the CD-ROM drive and clicked 'Open folder to view file using Windows Explorer'. But then I accidentally hit 'Always by the selected action'.
RESOLUTION: To restore the Autoplay feature of Windows, open My Computer, right-click on the CD drive, select Properties.Autoplay and select Restore Defaults. If the Autoplay tab does not appear in Windows 2000 and XP, close the Properties dialog box, click Start, Run, type services.msc, and click. Scroll down to find the Shell hardware detection section, change the drop-down box to the 'Startup type' column to Automatic, select Start or Resume, click OK and close the Services window. The CD drive's Properties dialog box now appears with other Autoplay options for image, video and other content. Here's how to restore the original values.
