Search easily with LaunchBar
Network Administration - In this article, TipsMake.com will introduce you to how LaunchBar tool supports you in your search.
LaunchBar is an application launcher that performs many different tasks: calculations, online searches, opening websites, searching in computers, performing pre-defined actions like things control playback in iTunes or run pre-written code scripts and, .
In addition LaunchBar has a feature that allows you to create your own search algorithms, which you can then use on search sites you regularly use. Some of them - like Amazon, Apple Developer Connection, Flickr, IMDb and YouTube - can be built into applications, but you can easily create other search algorithms according to your intentions. For example, here's how you can create a search shortcut for TipsMake.com.
- Load TipsMake.com and perform a search with a certain term, such as xyzzy .
- When the results page appears, select the URL , then copy and paste it into the text editor. (You can also edit in place in the URL bar if you want).
- Paste URL, replace your search term ( xyzzy ) with an asterisk ( * ). In this example, the resulting URL will look like this:
http:/// www. TipsMake.com /search.html?cx=003198751674731024891
% 3Aovffo1orlum & q = * & sa = search & client = idg-cse & cof = FORID% 3A11 & siteurl
= www. TipsMake.com% 2F;
- Copy the edited URL to the clipboard, then launch LaunchBar (the default shortcut is Command-Space).
- Click on the small tool icon on the right and navigate to Index -> Show Index .
- In the left sidebar, click on 'Search Templates (UTF-8) ', then the Add button at the bottom of the right panel.
- Enter TipsMake.com (or whatever you want) in the Name field, then paste the URL you copied into the Details field.
- Close the window and press Return when prompted to save the changes.
Now, whenever you want to perform a search with a term on Quantum, all you need to do is wake up LaunchBar , hit MW , then press Space Bar , type in the search query. , then press Return to return the search results page in your default browser. This is a really simple operation and speeds up the search tasks on websites that you often do.
However, on some sites like IMDb and YouTube, the exact information you are looking for is generally at the top of the search results page. You will not be taken directly to the search results when searching for something, but it will certainly be more interesting than taking one more step by clicking on the first item on the search results page? Using Google's I'm Feeling Lucky feature, we have come up with a way to improve this.
Open the search pattern screen in the LaunchBar Index and add another entry for it. Enter the name of the site you want to search through the Name field (eg Internet Movie Database ), then type the URL below into the Details field:
http://www.google.com/search?btnI&q=imdb+*
If you want to search through the Apple Trailers website, replace imdb in the above URL with apple + trailers . With Quantrimang, replace imdb with Quantrimang, with YouTube, replace it with youtube . Now run a search for Avatar using the IMDb search pattern you created (make sure you don't mix it with the default LaunchBar template), you'll be taken directly to the movie list on the website.
What you need to do here is to enter imdb avatar into the Google search box, press the ' I'm Feeling Lucky ' button instead of pressing Return . Google will automatically take you to the first hit on the search results page, which allows you to find exactly what you need. To be more specific, you can change the search pattern to search only on IMDb:
http://www.google.com/search?btnI&q=site%3Aimdb.com+*
Now you know how to add a search pattern to LaunchBar and already know the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' search format (which is copied from Lucky Google search pattern into LaunchBar), completely comfortable to cover. Experiment and implement other search patterns for your needs. If you follow the instructions correctly, you'll realize that shortcuts will speed up your Internet browsing a lot.
