Russian stock market staggered because of the virus
Russian stock exchange system (RTS - Russian Trading System) was forced to stop all transactions within an hour on Thursday (February 2) last week after being attacked by computer viruses.
Larisa Gorbunova - a spokesman for RTS - said all transactions on the stock market had to be stopped but the incident was quickly overcome.
It is still unclear what kind of virus is causing the problem, but according to RTS, the virus originates from the Internet and attacks a computer connected to the stock exchange system. 'The virus-infected computer soon began producing a huge amount of fake information packets that made the RTS (routers) network routers become overwhelming,' Dmitry Shatsky, vice president RTS president, said in a recent statement.
'As a result, the actual packets of information - data entered into the exchange system - could not be processed. RTS experts have conducted a series of measures to prevent future virus attacks that may occur in the future. '
The computer was infected with the virus - the root of this attack was discovered - immediately disconnected from the network. Experts have been testing and restarting the entire network and recommending that it only restart every normal activity after an hour.
'The RTS stock exchange system has not suffered any significant damage. The interruption of operating time recommended by experts is to prevent the exchange of information on the market.
Spokesperson Gorbunova also added that RTS has conducted internal investigations but did not say whether there was police intervention in such investigations.
