The new Firefox AI Controls allow users to disable all AI features.

Sometimes you just need a break from your browser constantly displaying AI information. Firefox understands that and is providing us all with a way to turn it off. Firefox AI Controls now lets you easily remove all AI features.

Access Firefox AI Controls

Firefox first introduced AI Controls as part of its browser settings in early 2026. With the release of Firefox 148, everyone has a toggle switch to turn off AI-powered features within the browser. No complicated settings or reliance on extensions or third-party tools are required.

All users will have these controls by the end of February 2026. So, if you haven't seen them yet, be patient, they will be updated soon. If you're lucky enough to be one of the first Firefox users to receive the update, use them immediately to disable AI in Firefox, especially after Firefox experienced spikes in CPU usage due to AI.

To access AI Controls, make sure you've updated to the latest version of Firefox, then open the Firefox menu and click Settings . Click AI Controls on the left.

The first step in removing AI from Firefox is to block the browser from automatically adding new AI features. In the AI Controls section of Firefox settings, enable the Block AI enhancements option .

This action prevents new AI features from being added in updates and removes pop-up windows suggesting you add them. It's a simple option, but it's great that Firefox thought to include it.

Remove Firefox On-Device AI

Firefox attempts to protect privacy by handling certain AI features on your device. While I appreciate prioritizing privacy, if you don't use those features, why have them on your device?

The Firefox AI Controls section includes an item called On-device AI . This includes translations, alternative text in the PDF viewer, tab group suggestions, and key points in link previews.

In the AI Controls settings , turn each option in this section to Blocked . Simply use the drop-down box next to each option to change it.

Please note that if you have used these features before, your device has already downloaded the necessary AI models to use them. Blocking these features will remove these models from your device.

Previously, the Firefox Nightly browser offered a way to remove them, but now you can remove these features in the regular Firefox browser.

Blocking AI chatbots in Firefox

Firefox lets you choose between several AI chatbots to use while browsing. This is a handy feature if you want to use it, but if not, you can block it using Firefox AI Controls. If you want to use an AI chatbot, people will open the chatbot's own website.

In the AI Controls section of the settings, scroll down to the AI chatbot providers in sidebar section . Use the drop-down box to select Blocked . This will remove the AI chatbot button from the sidebar when you reopen Firefox.

Manually disable AI in Firefox

If you can't update Firefox for any reason, but still want to remove AI features, you still have a few other options.

If you don't mind using an open-source tool, you can remove AI features from Firefox, Edge, Chrome, and other Chromium-based browsers using a free script. It only takes a few minutes. The downside is that if browser policies change, the script might not work correctly or at all.

Firefox allows you to manually adjust the configuration, as long as you know which option to look for. Technically, you only need to turn off one option to disable all other AI features, but Mozilla has admitted this isn't always effective, so it's best to turn off all options manually.

Open Firefox and go to about:config . Click on Accept the Risk and Continue . This is just to warn you that changing the configuration options will change how Firefox works.

Turn off the options by clicking the toggle switch to the right of each option and setting it to False . Find and turn off each of the following options:

  1. browser.ml.enable – This switch disables AI, but it doesn't always turn everything off as intended. If you want to retain some AI features, don't disable this option.
  2. browser.ml.chat.enabled – This disables the chatbot function from Firefox. You must disable this function for other chat-based configurations to be properly turned off.
  3. browser.ml.pageAssist.enabled – Disables AI page summarizer.
  4. extensions.ml.enabled – Prevents extensions from accessing any Firefox AI Controls.
  5. browser.ml.chat.menu – Remove the right-click menu option to chat about this issue.
  6. browser.ml.chat.page – Disables the chat menu.
  7. browser.ml.chat.sidebar – Remove AI chat from the sidebar.
  8. browser.ml.chat.page.footerBadge – Disables floating pages in the footer.
  9. browser.ml.chat.page.menuBadge – Remove the Ask AI badge.
  10. browser.ml.linkPreview.enabled – Disables AI-generated link previews.
  11. browser.tabs.groups.smart.enabled – Removes AI-powered smart tab groups.

If you want to remove certain features, simply turn off the ones you want.

Another option is to create a user.js file containing the options mentioned above, or any options you want to change. Open a plain text editor, such as Notepad, and enter each option in the following format:

user_pref("option", false);

Replace "option" with one of the options listed above. For example, for the AI disable option, your line would be user_pref("browser.ml.enable", false);

Enter each option on a separate line. Then, save the file as 'user.js'. The file must have the exact name and extension.

Next, open Firefox and type about:support into the address bar. Scroll down to Profile Folder and click Open . Copy and paste the user.js file into this folder. Restart Firefox for the changes to take effect.

If you want to re-enable the AI features, simply delete the user.js file from this folder.

Whether you use Firefox AI Controls or the manual method, you have control over the AI features in your browser. Now you can customize your new tab page with interesting backgrounds. Or, see how to integrate Firefox Focus into Safari for a safer experience on iOS. You can even remove all AI features from Windows in the process.
