iOS 16 currently runs on 90% of iPhones released in the last four years
Apple has just officially updated iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 device usage data on its developer website. According to the latest updated numbers from Apple, iOS 16 now runs on 90% of active iPhone models released in the past four years. Next is iOS 15 with 8% and older software versions hold the remaining small market share.
Looking across all active iPhones on the market, about 81% of devices are currently running the iOS 16 update, a 28% increase compared to iOS 16 usage data that Apple collected earlier this year. For reference, Apple collects device-based usage data transacted on its App Store platform.
On the iPad side of things, iPadOS version 16 is now running on 76% of all devices sold over the past four years. Meanwhile, 71% of all active iPad models on the market run iPadOS 16, an increase of 21% compared to previous statistics.
When it comes to rolling out the latest software updates, Apple devices are still several steps ahead of Android, largely due to the tight integration of the Apple ecosystem. For example, Google's Android 11 R is still the Android version with the highest usage rate according to data as of the end of April this year, even though Android 13 has been out for quite a long time.
As of now, the latest stable versions of iOS and iPadOS available are iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 which were released last month. Data on the operating system update status was released by Apple just a few days before the WWDC 2023 event, where Apple will talk about the next major software updates, including iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.
iOS 17 is expected to bring app sideloading functionality to iPhone along with redesigned system apps and turn-by-turn navigation on the lock screen. However, there are rumors that the sideloading feature will be limited to the European region only. For iPad, Apple is expected to reduce many iOS 16 lock screen customizations in the next major update. Let's wait and see!
