Method 1 of 3:

Sending a Gift Card on Desktop

  1. Open iTunes. Its app icon resembles a multicolored musical note on a white background.
    1. If prompted to update iTunes, click Download iTunes and then restart your computer when prompted.
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID. In order to send a gift card to someone else, you'll need to be signed into the Apple ID account that you use for iTunes purchases. To do so:
    1. Click the Account tab.
    2. Click Sign In... (if you see your name at the top of the Account drop-down menu, you're already signed in).
    3. Enter your Apple ID and password.
    4. Click Sign In
  3. Click the Store tab. It's at the top of the iTunes window.
  4. Click Send Gift. This link is on the right side of the page, just below the "MUSIC QUICK LINKS" heading.
  5. Enter an email address. Type in the email address of someone to whom you want to send the gift card.
    1. This does not have to be the email address that the person uses for their Apple ID account.
  6. Add a message. If you want to add a message (e.g., "Happy Birthday!") to the email in which the card will be sent, type the message into the "Message" box.
  7. Select an amount. On the right side of the page, click the amount of money that you want to load onto the gift card.
    1. If you don't see the correct amount here, click Other and type in the amount that you want to use. Any custom amounts must fall between $15 and $200.
  8. Determine when to send the gift. Check the "Now" box to send the gift card as soon as it's sent, or check the "Other Date" box and select a date to send the card later.
  9. Click Next. It's in the bottom-right corner of the window.
  10. Select an appearance. Click the theme that you want to apply to your gift card.
  11. Click Next.
  12. Click Buy Gift. This option is in the bottom-right corner of the window. Doing so will purchase the iTunes credit and send it to the specified email address on your selected date.
    1. If your Apple ID doesn't have any payment information (e.g., a credit card) associated with it, you'll be prompted to enter your payment details before you can buy the gift card.

Sending a Gift Card on iPhone

  1. Open your iPhone's iTunes Store. Tap the iTunes Store app icon, which resembles a white star on a violet background.
  2. Tap Music. It's in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  3. Scroll all the way down and tap Send Gift. This button is at the bottom of the page. Doing so brings up the gift card window.
  4. Enter an email address. Type in the email address of the person to whom you want to send the gift card.
  5. Select an amount. Tap the amount that you want to send to the person (e.g., $25), or tap Other and type in an amount between $15 and $200.
  6. Tap Next. It's in the top-right corner of the screen.
  7. Select a gift card appearance. Tap the theme that you want to use for your gift card.
  8. Tap Next.
  9. Tap Buy. It's in the top-right corner of the screen. Doing so will purchase the iTunes credit and send it to the specified email address.
    1. If your Apple ID doesn't have any payment information (e.g., a credit card) associated with it, you'll be prompted to enter your payment details before you can buy the gift card.

Requesting a Refund

  1. Open the Apple Support website. Go to https://getsupport.apple.com/ in your computer's browser.
    1. Keep in mind that the chances of you receiving a refund for your purchased gift card are incredibly slim.
  2. Click Report a Problem. It's in the upper-left side of the page.
  3. Enter your Apple ID. Type in your Apple ID email address and password, then click at the bottom of the form.
  4. Find your purchased gift card. Scroll down until you find the card that you purchased.
  5. Click Report a Problem. It's to the right of the gift card's heading. You should see a couple of text items appear below the gift card.
  6. Click the "Choose Problem" drop-down box. This is directly below the gift card's heading.
  7. Select a problem. In the drop-down menu, click the option that fits your current situation. Some of the options that you'll see include the following:
    1. I didn't authorize this purchase
    2. Didn't mean to purchase this item
    3. Meant to purchase a different item
  8. Enter a message for Apple. In the "Message" field, enter the following information:[1]
    1. Your Apple ID email address
    2. The amount to be refunded
    3. Your current shipping address
  9. Click Submit. It's below the "Message" text field. Doing so will send your request to Apple, at which point you can expect them to review your claim within two weeks.
    1. You should receive a confirmation email with Apple's decision. If you don't receive an email after two weeks, you can try submitting your request again.
