1. Set a password for the USB with Bitlocker
Step 1 : You connect the USB to the computer, then right-click on the USB drive and select Turn on BitLocker
Step 2 : You tick Use password to unlock the drive, then enter the password in the 2 blank boxes and click Next .
Step 3 : Choose one of the 3 ways to backup your password in case you forget the password we can use. Here we choose Save to a file to save the password into a text file.
Step 4 : The save file window appears, select the folder to save the backup file and click Save to save.
Step 5 : Next, click Next
Step 6: Here we have 2 options:
- Encrypt used disk space only: Only encrypt used disk space
- Encrypt entire drive: Encrypting the entire drive
If your USB drive is blank, no data, then choose Encrypt used disk space only for fast encryption. If your USB has internal data, select Encrypt entire drive to encrypt the entire USB and internal data.
Step 7 : This step only appears if you are using Windows 10 version 1511 or higher.
In version 1511 and above Windows will provide us with a new encryption method called XTS-AES. This encryption method is more advanced, but it only applies to Windows 10 version 1511 or higher, the lower Windows version will not open this encoding.
So if your USB is only used for Windows 10 1511 or later computers, you can choose New encryption mode . If you use USB for both Windows lower select the Compatible mode (compatible encoding) .
Selected, click Next .
Step 8 : Click Start encrypting to start encryption.
After encrypting the USB drive, there will be a lock pattern as shown below and when you open the USB drive, you will have to enter the password:
2. How to remove the Bitlocker password from the USB
To disable the USB lock feature with BitLocker, right-click the USB drive and select Manager Bitlocker
Note : You must unlock the USB before you can choose Manager Bitlocker
A new window appears, select Turn off Bitlocker, a message window appears and click Turn off Bitlocker again.
