To change the default setting of opening files and folders from double click to one click, go to the Start menu . Search for File Explorer and then click the result when it appears or press Enter .

In the window, go to View> Options> Change Folder and Search Options .

In the window that appears, select the ' Single-Click to Open an Item (Point to Select) ' button.

Now that you've enabled this setting, if you want to select an icon without opening it, just hover over it for a while.
