Germany intends to spend 20 billion for the public computer system running Windows 7 to receive extended support
The German government will pay at least 800,000 Euro (about 20 billion VND) in 2020 in exchange for the ESU package for 33,000 payroll computers of government organizations.
As we have reported, Windows 7 has officially entered the phase of discontinuing support (EoS) from January 14, meaning that users will not receive any additional feature updates as well as Any security patches since that timeline. However, many statistics have shown that the majority of computers running Windows 7 are now owned by enterprises and public organizations due to the stability that this operating system brings.
Of course, changing the operating system on such large public computer systems is not simple and very time consuming. For this reason, Microsoft has provided an additional Windows 7 support package for organizations and businesses with the package name Extended Security Updates (ESU). ESU will be valid for a maximum of 3 years, and of course not free.
According to a report from ZDNet, the German government will pay at least 800,000 Euro (about 20 billion VND) in 2020 in exchange for ESU package for 33,000 computers on the payroll of government organizations, equivalent to Costs more than 24 euros (about 615,000 VND) per device.
Not only that, according to Microsoft's regulations, ESU renewal fee is doubled every year. So if the German government still plans to continue using Windows 7 in 2021, it will have to pay 1.6 million euros, and 3.2 million euros next year - a huge fee. But the German government certainly won't let this scenario happen. German news site Handelsblatt revealed that the German government has started deploying migration plans to Windows 10 since the end of 2018, and is expected to be completed in 2021.
Clearly, Microsoft will have to make more agreements with organizations about the price of ESU services in each specific case. That is why actual costs are not disclosed. If you need an ESU for your business, proactively contact Microsoft and negotiate for the best price.
