Changing the DNS server used by a Wi-Fi connection is usually safe and reversible. It can make the first lookup for a website faster, improve reliability, add filtering, or enable encrypted DNS. It will not increase your Wi-Fi signal strength or the raw download speed supplied by your internet provider.

What DNS does
The Domain Name System translates names such as tipsmake.com into IP addresses that computers use to reach servers. Browsers and operating systems cache many answers, so the DNS resolver is normally involved at the start of a connection rather than throughout an entire download or video stream.

What can change after switching DNS
Page-start time and reliability
A responsive resolver may shorten the delay before a new site begins loading, especially if the current ISP resolver is slow or unreliable. Once the connection is established, DNS does not make the server send a large file faster. The improvement may therefore be noticeable, small, or nonexistent.
Privacy
Changing from an ISP resolver to a public resolver changes which organization processes the DNS queries; it does not make browsing anonymous. Traditional DNS is normally unencrypted, and the chosen resolver can still receive query information. Filtering and security
Some resolvers block known malicious domains, adult content, or advertising domains. Filtering policies differ by provider and are not a substitute for browser updates, safe downloads, and malware protection. Website availability and CDN routing
A different resolver can return a different server address for a content-delivery network. That may help or hurt performance depending on location and provider design. DNS can also bypass a block implemented only at the resolver level, but it cannot defeat IP blocking, account restrictions, or every regional restriction.

Possible problems
- No websites open: the addresses may be mistyped, the resolver may be unavailable, or the network may require its own DNS during sign-in.
- Work or school resources fail: private network names may resolve only through the organization's DNS.
- Parental controls stop working: router or ISP filtering may depend on the default resolver.
- One device behaves differently: a browser may use its own secure-DNS setting instead of the operating-system setting.
To undo the change, set DNS back to Automatic or DHCP, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and restart the browser.
Change DNS on one device or the router?
Changing DNS on a phone or computer affects that device and often only the selected Wi-Fi network. Changing it in the router can provide the setting to devices that use the router's DHCP configuration, although some apps and devices may still select their own resolver. A device-level change is safer for testing; a router-level change is easier when the same resolver should apply across the home.

How to decide whether changing DNS helps
- Record the current setting or leave it on Automatic so you can restore it.
- Choose a reputable resolver and enter both its primary and secondary addresses exactly.
- Test several sites at different times rather than judging from one page load.
- Check that banking, streaming, work, school, and parental-control services still work.
- Keep the new setting only if it improves reliability, privacy features, or filtering for your needs.
