Differentiate between TTF and OTF fonts
If you often work with fonts, perhaps many times you have asked yourself "What is the difference between OTF and TTF?"When deciding to download fonts for my system.Today, we will analyze some key differences between OTF and TTF fonts, and should choose the font for each individual situation.
TTF and OTF are file extensions used to indicate that this file is a font format, which can be used in formatting documents for printing.TTF stands for TrueType Font, a relatively old font, while OTF stands for OpenType Font, built in part based on TrueType standards.
For designers, both amateur and professional, the main difference between OTF and TTF is in advanced sorting capabilities.TTF depends only on glyph tables to determine what each character looks like while OTF can use glyphs along with CCF (Compact Font Format) tables. The third Bezier spline used by CCF allows using fewer points to determine how a character looks, compared to the quadratic Bezier spline used by TTF fonts.OTF also added some smartfont features, at the top of the sfnt structure being used by TTF.This feature is responsible for adding language support for fonts.Note that using CCF in OTF can lead to significantly smaller file sizes, since there are no special features used in the font.Although it may not have a big impact on your computer, it is worth noting.
Although the OTF font has proved its superiority, especially when used with CCF, TTF fonts are still very popular. The number of OTF fonts has increased significantly although it may take longer than expected. The reason behind this popularity is that creating TTF fonts is simpler than creating OTF fonts using CCF.Most font makers still stick with what they know, they are used to even though those fonts are worse than alternative fonts. There is really no reason too big to force font makers to stop using TTF in creating new fonts.
There is really no big problem for users because almost all modern applications that use fonts can work with both TTF and OTF files.Users do not necessarily have to choose a font because they can be used together in document creation or print layout.
Summary:
- TTF is a file extension for TrueType fonts while OTF is a file extension for OpenType fonts.
- TTF fonts only depend on a glyph table while OTF fonts can have glyph or CCF tables.
- TTF font files are usually much larger in size than OTF font files.
- TTF fonts are still used more commonly than OTF fonts.
- TTF fonts are much easier to do than OTF fonts
