Claude Topped the U.S. Free App Chart in February 2026: What It Means

Claude briefly reached the top of Apple's U.S. free iPhone app chart in late February 2026, ahead of ChatGPT. That chart is a snapshot of download activity in one store and country. It does not establish that Claude had more total users, was the leading AI app worldwide, or remained No. 1.

What changed in the rankings?

Contemporaneous reports recorded Claude at No. 1 on the U.S. free-app chart around February 28. App analytics company Appfigures also tracked a rise in Claude downloads during February. Its separate global monthly analysis estimated that ChatGPT was the world's most downloaded app that month. The measures cover different places and periods, so they are not contradictory.

Why was Claude drawing attention?

The chart movement coincided with a public dispute over U.S. military use of AI. Anthropic described its limits on uses involving mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons in a February 26 statement. OpenAI announced a separate agreement on February 28 and described its own safeguards. Some users publicly said they were switching services in response, but an app-store chart cannot reveal the motives of everyone who installed Claude.

Other factors may also affect downloads, including promotions, product changes, and media attention. A download is not necessarily an active user or a paid subscriber.
