Youtube Thumbnails Will Soon Be Blurred, Here's Why

YouTube is rolling out a new feature that aims to make the platform safer for families. You can see blurred thumbnails for NSFW or adult videos in search results without having to change any settings.

NSFW YouTube Filter Automatically Blurs Thumbnails

Billions of videos on YouTube host everything from children's content to adult content, many of which comply with YouTube's content policies and community guidelines.

To keep the platform safe for everyone, YouTube is testing blurred thumbnails in search results. According to YouTube's support page, these thumbnails will appear for search queries that contain adult themes. While the thumbnails are blurred, users will still be able to see the video title, channel name, and description. You still have the option to unblur the thumbnail if the subject matter of the video is not disturbing.

This feature works much like SafeSearch on Google , automatically filtering adult content from search results if enabled. However, with the new YouTube feature, you don't have to adjust any settings and adult search results aren't automatically removed from search results. Instead, the blur effect provides an extra layer of protection for viewers from encountering inappropriate content.

YouTube notes that the feature is rolling out to a small percentage of viewers. YouTube explains that the goal of testing this feature is to "understand whether this type of feature helps users avoid watching content that follows YouTube's Community Guidelines but may be sensitive."

So far, YouTube has not revealed exactly which search keywords or topics can trigger the blur effect, nor has the company clarified whether the feature will appear on the homepage.
