What is worth watching in Wednesday season 2?
After a nearly three-year hiatus, Netflix 's wildly popular Addams Family spin - off Wednesday returns for a second season. Viewers see Jenna Ortega's goth heroine return to Nevermore Academy for another year of exciting adventures, thrilling family stories, and supernatural mysteries.
When Wednesday debuted in November 2022, Season 1 broke the record for the most hours watched in a week for any English-language series on Netflix, with a whopping 341.23 million hours watched in its first seven days on the streaming platform. And co-creators Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (Smallville, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) are banking on Wednesday Season 2 of the creepy teen comedy – which premieres with Season 1 (Episodes 1–4) on August 6, followed by Season 2 (Episodes 5–8) on September 3.
' Our top priority is always not to fall off the charts in the second season, and no one has higher expectations for Season 2 than we do ,' Millar told the Hollywood Reporter. ' There are so many shows that I've watched and loved the first season, and then I've watched the first 20 minutes of the second season and then quit. So making sure the show hits the comedy, the mystery, and all those other elements is a top priority, we don't want to disappoint. '
Here's everything you need to know before tuning in to Wednesday Season 2 .
How did Widget Season 1 end?
After being expelled from her public high school for an incident involving man-eating piranhas at the beginning of Season 1, Wednesday is enrolled at Nevermore, the same magical boarding school outside of Jericho, Vermont, that her parents, Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), once attended. There, Wednesday is introduced to a diverse group of outcasts—like mermaid Bianca (Joy Sunday), gorgon Ajax (Georgie Farmer), and werewolf roommate Enid (Emma Myers). Together, they begin honing their psychic abilities.
After the monster Hyde brutally murders a telekinetic student named Rowan (Calum Ross), Wednesday and her right-hand man, the Thing (Victor Dorobantu), launch an investigation to uncover the identity of Hyde and his master, and piece together the connections between Jericho's dark past and his current crimes. Ultimately, Wednesday completes the puzzle to discover that Hyde is Tyler (Hunter Doohan), her fake boyfriend, the normal son of Jericho's police chief Donovan Galpin (Jamie McShane), but he is being controlled by Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci).
As it turns out, Marilyn Thornhill is the alias of the presumed-dead Laurel Gates, a descendant of Joseph Crackstone (William Houston), the colonial founder of Jericho, who faked his own death in order to resurrect her crazed ancestor from the dead so he could complete his mission of wiping out all outcasts. With the help of Enid, Bianca, Eugene (Moosa Mostafa), a telepathic insect control expert, and the ghost of her ancestor, Goody Addams (also played by Ortega), Wednesday takes down Tyler & Laurel, defeating Crackstone once and for all. However, considering that Tyler and Laurel were only captured and not killed, it's possible that they could still play a role in the events of Season 2.
Things to Expect in Wednesday Part 2
As Wednesday Season 2 begins, we know that Wednesday will have to grapple with the same stalker introduced in the final scene of Season 1. She will also begin to tap deeper into her psychic powers even though Goody is no longer there to serve as her spirit guide.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Addams Family will have more roles this season, with Wednesday's younger brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) starting at Nevermore while Morticia and Gomez have a reason to assert their status at the school. Wednesday and Pugsley's Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) and Morticia's grandmother Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley) will also join in on the darker moments.
Notable additions to the cast include Steve Buscemi, who will play Nevermore's new headmaster, Principal Barry Dort; Thandiwe Newton as Dr. Rachael Fairburn, head psychiatrist at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital, Tyler's new home; and the one and only Mother Monster Lady Gaga, whose character description reads: " Mysterious and enigmatic, Rosaline Rotwood is a legendary Nevermore teacher who meets Wednesday ."
As for Wednesday Season 2's main mystery, in a short trailer released on Netflix in May, Gough and Millar said they were able to "go beyond" the plot of Season 1. " The ambition of the show is limitless ," Millar said. " We let our imaginations run wild ."
Overall, Part 1 of "Wednesday" Part 2 still delivers the visual delight that made Burton's entire world so appealing. With the Addams family getting more screen time, more mystery, and Ortega at the helm, the film is as compelling, engaging, and worth watching as it was when it first came out three years ago.
