What happens when you beat the smartphone with a hammer?

With a simple "armor" consisting of shorts, slippers and a shielded wooden shield, a Thai young man held a hammer down a smartphone battery while a friend came back all the action by phone.

Nothing happened for about a second after he hit the battery with a hammer. Then suddenly the battery caught fire and exploded and shot into the sky like a small rocket. Then this guy had to hold his head down and step back because the fragments began to fall like small fireballs.
