New technology helps prevent smartphone batteries from catching and exploding
Some researchers have stated that they have discovered a way to make lithium-ion batteries unable to catch fire.
Lithium-ion batteries contain lithium-ion molecules that travel between positive and negative electrodes. This battery is fast charging, can be loaded many times before being bottled and does not occupy a lot of space so it is put to use in a variety of products such as smartphones, laotop, tablets, airplanes .
However, besides the above advantages, lithium-ion batteries also have disadvantages, which are explosive. The reason is that inside the battery is compressed the flammable and volatile compounds to help lithium-ion molecules can move between the two electrodes easily. During charging, the battery generates heat and if it is not properly controlled, it may cause the internal compound to ignite and even explode.
On smartphones and electronics today, lithium-ion batteries often have two electrodes separated by a thin piece of plastic. If for some reason this thin sheet of plastic is affected causing two electrodes to come into contact with each other, the liquid electrolytes in the battery cells will catch fire and could cause an explosion.
The researchers made the liquid in the lithium-ion battery become stiff when impacted by adding a silica additive compound to the electrolytes. This helps prevent electrodes from touching each other, which in turn can completely eliminate the explosion of lithium-ion batteries and make smartphones safer.
According to researchers, at the first stage, this technology can only be used on batteries on remote control aircraft (Drones).
