3 Early ARKit Games for iPhone and iPad

Apple's ARKit brought camera-based augmented reality to iPhone and iPad with iOS 11. Instead of requiring a headset, supported games could place characters and scenes on a real table or floor viewed through the device's camera. The three titles below were among the early examples of that approach.

Its AR mode places the large armored character in the room, letting you view it from different angles and stage a battle against enemies on a real surface. The effect is best suited to a large, uncluttered tabletop where the models remain easy to see.

2. Egg, Inc.

Egg, Inc. is an incremental farming game in which players expand a chicken farm, improve buildings and sell eggs. The AR feature moves the farm from the normal game view onto a nearby surface. You can look across the buildings from different angles and inspect the layout as if it were a small physical model.

The AR view is mainly a visual way to explore the farm; the core progression still comes from managing production and upgrades in the game.

3. Flat Pack

Flat Pack combines platforming with a three-dimensional level wrapped around geometric objects. In AR mode, the level appears in the room and the player moves around it to follow the character's route. That change in viewpoint helps reveal platforms and hazards that may be hidden from one side.

Because the game depends on seeing several faces of the level, place it where you can move around the virtual object without bumping into furniture.

Other early iOS AR games

Other titles associated with the first wave of iOS AR games included Splitter Critters, Thomas & Friends Minis and Kings of Pool.
