Samsung aims to produce smartphone camera sensors with resolutions up to 600 megapixels
With the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung has broken the limit for smartphone camera resolution with a primary sensor of up to 108 megapixels, but this is not the final destination that the company aims to.
At a blog post on the website, Samsung's sensor production chief, Yongin Park , talked about what it had achieved in designing camera sensors:
"In order to 'squeeze' a million-pixel carrier onto a tiny smartphone camera sensor, the pixels have to be made as small as possible. This results in the sensor having poor light reception, resulting in blurred, lifeless photos; the balance between the number of pixels (resolution) and their size is something that all manufacturers have considered so far. "
Explain ISOCELL Plus camera sensor technology
Samsung is capable of improving image quality but at the same time does not need to reduce the resolution by applying ISOCELL technology, using 'thin films' to block between pixels to prevent light from being moved from this point. to another point. Other technologies such as Tetracell or Nonacell to get an average of 4 or 9 pixels to increase the quality of images taken. Mr. Park said that the company can create sensors with small pixels of only 0.7μm with these technologies.
Mr. Park also shared that the number of 600 megapixels will be Samsung's next destination thanks to the new ISOCELL Plus technology - upgrading the thin film material. High-resolution sensors in addition to increasing the quality of photos taken on smartphones can also be used in other areas of technology such as self-driving cars, drones or IoT. According to scientists, the resolution of the human eye falls to about 500 megapixels, which means that if Samsung successfully develops the 600 megapixel sensor will be officially sharper than the human eye!
