On May 2, 2012, Microsoft decided to "retire" The Windows Live brand because it did not achieve much success as expected since its launch in 2005.

Microsoft says services like Hotmail, SkyDrive, Messenger IM don't have a strong connection with Windows Live, so they don't create enough appeal. Besides, Windows operating systems are not designed to interact well with cloud services.

Microsoft hopes that Windows 8 will create a breakthrough, with the design able to work well with both desktop and mobile devices.

Steven Sinofsky, president of Windows and Windows Live, said Windows 8 allows users to easily access services and software. Users do not have to select and install individual services as before, instead all Microsoft services will be available as soon as you turn on a computer running Windows 8.

In the next few months, Windows Live ID will be renamed to Windows Account; Users can access online services via web browser, synchronize and copy data from devices running Windows Phone and computers running Windows 8. Computers running Windows 8 will be pre-installed applications and Cloud services like Microsoft Account, SkyDrive, Mail, Calendar, People (contacts), Messaging and Photos / Videos.

Microsoft said it will rename applications and services such as Windows Live ID, Windows Live Mail, Windows Calendar, Windows Contacts, MSN Messenger, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Movie Maker. The Microsoft Account can be linked to third-party online services like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Microsoft said it plans to release information about Skype integration into the project in the near future.
