Scratch 2 Offline Editor - or simply the Scratch 2 app - is a free educational program that lets you easily code and develop your own software. As a project of Lifelong Kindergarten Group at MIT Media Lab, Scratch 2 Offline Editor is designed for any coding beginner, teaching and training them how to program their own interactive games or animations, using simple coding blocks to get started.
Scratch Features
Easy program development
Scratch 2 is a programming language and online community. It allows you to create your own interactive shows and share them with others, so anyone interested can learn more. The app is designed for children from 8 to 16 years old.
However, anyone can use it for any purpose, and there's simple ScratchJr for ages 5 to 7. It's free and you can donate to support. You can try out other users' projects, read comments and join forums, and create your own projects without signing up for an account.
This tool isn't just for students - parents, educators, and developers are all encouraged to get involved in the fun. The great thing about this app is that it can run in almost any browser so you can easily share your projects.
The code of all shared projects can be seen by curious users, helping to teach them more about how to do complex yet interesting coding. You can even copy projects by "re-mixing" them and making your own changes to boost creativity, which is allowed, as long as you burn the sources.
If you don't want others to copy your work, you can avoid sharing it with the community. Another way is to use the Scratch 2 Offline Editor, the native desktop app that lets you create Scratch projects without the need for an Internet connection. This tool is available for free download on the official website. This is great when you just want to practice coding without interacting with the community. However, its installation also requires Adobe AIR in the system.
Similar to the browser version
The Scratch 2 app works similarly to a web app. Instead of lines of code, you have to type like other programming languages. This software provides the graphical blocks in the form of code and their functionality labeled above. You simply drag and drop them over the workspace to apply and click on them to execute the command. The preview page will show any objects or models in which you are working. All blocks can be connected and rearranged like puzzle pieces.
To make it easier to create complex programs, blocks are color-coded based on functionality, such as blue for motion commands and purple for audio commands. Duration and their special fields can also be edited. However, in addition to the Codes tab , there are Costumes and Sounds tabs . Tab Costumes display a simple graphic editor, allowing you to work on the visual side of the project. The Sounds tab works in a similar way, displaying a simple audio editor.
However, there are still some minor differences between the two versions. The File menu has different options like 'Check for Update' . You can share your work by uploading it to your Scratch account - although you still have to manually share it there. The tips menu also shows up in full screen in the offline editor. However, cloud variables are not available. The plus is that you can use the app without an account, just like in the web version.
Perfect for offline use
In general, Scratch 2 Offline Editor is quite handy when you don't have any connection while working. It works seamlessly with the web version, so you can convert your projects whenever you want. Unfortunately, downloading the app means a different program must be installed, and you cannot directly interact with the community using the PC version, as you cannot sign in to it.
