How to use Apple's Instant Hotspot feature
Apple's Instant Hotspot feature can turn almost any iOS device with mobile connectivity into a personal hotspot for all Apple devices. Using an iOS device as a hotspot is useful when traveling or when you don't want to use a WiFi network at a certain coffee shop.
Actually, there is no need to set up this feature (as long as the devices meet the requirements) and the process of connecting to the hotspot device is extremely easy. Here is what you need to know.
Request
To use Instant Hotspot, you will need an iOS device with an activated mobile data plan that includes a hotspot service. The device will need to run iOS 8.1 or later. According to Apple, devices that will provide hotspots to other Apple devices are:
- iPhone 5 and above
- iPad Pro
- iPad (fourth generation) and above
- iPad Air and above
- iPad Mini and above
Of course, the iPad models on the list will need to be models that use both WiFi and cellular data packets.
The following are models that can be connected to a mobile device and use the Instant Hotspot feature:
Establish
As long as you have the device that meets the above requirements and you are logged into the same iCloud account on all those devices, the setup is done by Apple in the background. You do not have to connect or pair anything.
If you have problems, here are some things to check:
- Turn on Bluetooth on both devices.
- Turn on WiFi on both devices.
- Make sure you are using the same Apple ID / iCloud account on both devices.
- Ensure that the wireless package allows the use of hotspots.
Using Instant Hotspot
To establish a connection on a Mac, click the WiFi icon in the menu bar. Let the list of available networks be displayed, which contains the iPhone or iPad as the Personal Hotspot option. Click on the device to start using the hotspot feature.
Using another iOS device, you can access the Instant Hotspot feature by opening Settings> Wi-Fi and searching for the iOS device you want to connect to in the options list.
When Instant Hotspot is used, you will see a blue bar on your iOS device that acts as a hotspot, letting you know if a device (or devices) is connected to it. Touch the blue bar and slide Personal Hotspot to Off to disconnect all connected devices.
Hope you are succesful.
