How to Fix Instagram Posts or Stories Not Sharing to Facebook

Repair Instagram-to-Facebook sharing by checking Accounts Center, cross-posting settings, destinations, permissions, app sessions, and network issues.

Table of Contents

If an Instagram post, Reel, or Story will not share to Facebook, first confirm that the correct profiles are connected in Meta's Accounts Center and that sharing is enabled for the content type. If the connection is correct, check the selected Facebook destination, permissions, app versions, and account sessions before removing and reconnecting anything.

Instagram post or Story failing to share to Facebook

1. Check whether the accounts are connected

In Instagram, open your profile menu and look for Accounts Center, often under Settings and activity. Open the profiles or accounts section and confirm that the intended Instagram and Facebook profiles are both listed.

If the Facebook profile is missing, use the add-account control and follow Meta's sign-in and confirmation steps. Connect only accounts you own or are authorized to manage.

Older Instagram interface for linking a Facebook account

The older Linked Accounts menu shown in previous Instagram versions has largely been replaced by Accounts Center. If the screenshot does not match your app, search settings for Accounts Center rather than looking for the old label.

2. Review Sharing across profiles

A connection alone does not guarantee that every content type will cross-post. In Accounts Center, open Sharing across profiles or the equivalent sharing settings. Select the Instagram profile as the source and the correct Facebook profile or Page as the destination.

Review the available controls for Stories, posts, and Reels separately. Turn on only the automatic sharing options you want. You can also leave automatic sharing off and choose Facebook manually on the final Instagram publishing screen.

3. Confirm the Facebook destination

Users who manage several Facebook profiles or Pages can accidentally select the wrong destination. Return to the sharing settings and verify the exact profile or Page name.

If you are sharing to a Page, confirm that your Facebook account still has the necessary Page access. A role or access change can break cross-posting even when both profiles remain visible in Accounts Center.

4. Check whether the Instagram item can be shared

Try a simple photo without licensed music, a collaboration, a branded-content setting, a product tag, or another special element. If the basic post shares but a complex item does not, one of its features may not transfer to the Facebook destination.

Story music, interactive stickers, effects, audience settings, and certain Reel audio can behave differently across the two apps. When necessary, publish the item separately on Facebook using an original file you are allowed to use.

5. Retry the failed share from a stable connection

Open the failed post or Story and check its menu for a Share to Facebook or retry option. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if the original upload stalled, and wait for the Instagram upload to finish before closing the app.

Do not keep tapping the publish button rapidly; that can create duplicate posts when the connection recovers.

6. Update and restart both apps

  1. Install current Instagram and Facebook updates from the official app store.
  2. Close both apps completely.
  3. Restart the phone.
  4. Open Facebook first and confirm the intended account is active.
  5. Open Instagram and test sharing a simple item again.

On Android, clearing only the app cache can help with a damaged temporary session. Avoid clearing all app data unless you know your login method and have checked for drafts that could be lost. On iPhone, reinstalling should be a later step for the same reason.

7. Refresh the account sessions

If the apps are current but sharing still fails, sign out of the affected account in both apps, restart the phone, and sign back in through the official apps. Confirm that you can access each profile normally before testing cross-posting.

This step can repair an expired authorization after a password change or security check. If Instagram or Facebook reports suspicious activity, finish the official security review instead of repeatedly reconnecting the profiles.

Use this only after checking the settings above. Before disconnecting, note which profiles are linked and which sharing options are enabled.

  1. Open Accounts Center and select the connected profiles or accounts.
  2. Choose the option to remove the affected account from that Accounts Center.
  3. Read the confirmation screen carefully; Meta may explain which connected experiences will stop.
  4. Complete the removal, restart both apps, and add the account again.
  5. Return to Sharing across profiles and re-enable the desired content types.

Disconnecting the profiles should stop or change connected experiences; it does not ordinarily mean that every post previously shared to Facebook is automatically deleted. Review the confirmation shown by Meta for the specific accounts before proceeding.

9. Check account or Page restrictions

Cross-posting may fail if Instagram, Facebook, or the destination Page has a publishing restriction. Review account status, Page access, and any notices in the support inbox. Resolve the restriction through the official explanation rather than using a third-party “unlock” service.

What the error message can tell you

  • Account not connected: Add or reauthorize the Facebook profile in Accounts Center.
  • Permission or destination error: Verify Page access and the selected Facebook destination.
  • Music or media unavailable: Remove the unsupported element or publish a permitted version separately.
  • Upload failed: Retry on a stable connection after restarting the app.
  • No Facebook sharing option: Review Sharing across profiles and confirm the content type is enabled.
  • Session expired: Complete the official sign-in or security check in both apps.

If the failure continues across different media and connections, use Instagram's Report a problem option and include the exact error text, device type, app version, and time of the failed attempt.
