How to Find and Catch Rare Pokémon in Pokémon GO

There is no single trick that guarantees rare Pokémon. The most reliable approach is to target the feature that currently distributes the species—such as an event, raid, research task, Egg pool, Incense encounter, or trade—then use a strong ball, an appropriate Berry, a curveball, and an accurate throw.

1. Check current events before searching

Events temporarily change wild spawns, raids, Eggs, research rewards, and bonuses. A Pokémon that is normally difficult to find may become common for a few hours or days. Read the in-game Today view, event details, and official announcements before spending time or premium items.

Pay attention to the event start and end time in your local time zone. Also check whether the desired form, costume, or Shiny chance is actually available through the event feature you plan to use.

2. Match the species to its encounter source

• Wild spawns: explore suitable habitats and active event areas.
• Raids: check nearby Gyms and the current raid rotation.
• Research: complete Field, Timed, Special, or event research that lists the encounter.
• Eggs: inspect the possible hatch list for each Egg before incubating.
• GO Battle League: review the current encounter pool and rank requirements.
• Incense: use regular or Daily Adventure Incense while moving as required.
• Trading: arrange a legal in-game trade with another trainer.

3. Use Daily Adventure Incense correctly

Daily Adventure Incense can produce a stream of encounters during its active period when you are moving. Walk a safe, continuous route with a stable location signal, keep enough item-storage and Pokémon-storage space, and carry suitable balls and Berries before activating it.

Some especially rare encounters can have low catch rates and may flee. Treat the first throw seriously: select the best appropriate ball, use a high-value catch Berry if the encounter matters, and aim for a controlled curveball.

4. Search efficiently in the wild

Use the Nearby screen to identify silhouettes or species around PokéStops. Weather can increase spawns of matching types and can also raise their level, although weather does not guarantee a rare species. Parks, waterfronts, city centers, and other habitats can produce different spawn patterns, but real-world access and safety come first.

Do not trespass, drive while playing, enter dangerous areas, or rely on unofficial location manipulation. A planned walking loop around publicly accessible PokéStops is safer and usually more efficient.

5. Prepare for raids and research encounters

If the target is in raids, build suitable counters, join enough trainers for the difficulty, and confirm you have a Raid Pass before entering. After a successful raid, the Premier Balls, medal bonuses, friendship contribution, and throw quality all matter during the catch encounter.

Research encounters are useful because they can be saved for later, but the research task must still be obtainable and completed within any stated deadline. Keep enough storage space before claiming the reward.

6. Stack catch bonuses

1. Choose the strongest suitable ball available for that encounter.
2. Use a Razz Berry, Golden Razz Berry, or Silver Pinap Berry according to whether catch security or extra Candy is the priority.
3. Spin the ball for a curveball bonus.
4. Aim for a Great or Excellent hit that you can land consistently.
5. Time the throw to arrive just after the Pokémon's attack animation.

The shrinking circle controls the Nice, Great, or Excellent target. A smaller circle offers a stronger bonus when hit, but it does not make the throw itself easier. Missing the circle entirely wastes that accuracy opportunity.

7. Trade when the species is unavailable locally

Trading can complete a Pokédex entry or provide a second chance at better IVs. Trades cost Stardust, require the trainers to meet the game's distance and friendship conditions, and can be subject to Special Trade limits. IVs are rerolled during the trade, and a traded Pokémon cannot simply be traded back.

Never pay an unofficial seller for an account, location-spoofed capture, or off-platform “delivery.” Use the in-game trade system with someone you know and review the confirmation screen before completing the exchange.

Before starting a rare-Pokémon hunt

• Confirm the Pokémon is currently available and through which feature.
• Clear item and Pokémon storage.
• Stock balls, Berries, Revives, and passes appropriate to the plan.
• Charge the phone and enable Adventure Sync only if you want eligible background distance counted.
• Choose a safe public route and follow local rules.

Rarity in Pokémon GO changes with rotations and events. Current availability is more important than an old fixed list, so verify the distribution first and then concentrate your time and items on the correct encounter source.
