How to Check Pokémon GO IVs Safely

The safest way to check a Pokémon's IVs is the built-in Appraise feature in Pokémon GO. It shows the individual Attack, Defense, and HP values without requiring a separate iPhone app, a PC login, or access to your game account.

IVs are permanent hidden bonuses assigned when that individual Pokémon is obtained. Powering up or evolving changes CP and other displayed values, but it does not improve the Pokémon's IVs.

CP and IV are not the same

CP reflects a Pokémon's current battle strength based on its species, level, and IVs. A high-CP catch may simply be at a higher level. A lower-CP Pokémon can have better IVs and reach a strong result after investment.

• CP: changes when the Pokémon is powered up or evolved.
• IVs: fixed bonuses to Attack, Defense, and HP.
• Moves: separate from IVs and often critical to actual performance.

Check IVs in the Pokémon GO app

1. Open Pokémon GO and tap the Poké Ball menu.
2. Select Pokémon to open your storage.
3. Choose the individual Pokémon you want to inspect.

5. Read the three bars for Attack, Defense, and HP.

The Pokémon storage search supports star-rating filters such as 0*, 1*, 2*, 3*, and 4*. These are useful for quickly reviewing perfect appraisals, stronger general candidates, or low-rated Pokémon before a storage cleanup.

Do not transfer everything with a low star rating automatically. Some Pokémon are rare, costumed, useful for trades, have valuable moves, or suit CP-limited Trainer Battles despite a low general appraisal.

Why a perfect appraisal is not always best for PvP

In Great League and Ultra League, a Pokémon must stay below a CP limit. Because Attack contributes strongly to CP, some species perform better within the cap with lower Attack and higher Defense and HP IVs. The ideal spread depends on the species, evolution, level, and league.

For raids, Master League, and many general uses, high overall IVs—especially high Attack for damage breakpoints—can be attractive. For capped leagues, use a reputable PvP ranking calculator that states its assumptions and update date.

If you use a desktop IV calculator

A calculator can compare possible stat combinations or rank a Pokémon for a specific league. Enter only non-sensitive game values such as species, CP, HP, level estimate, and appraisal information.

• Do not give a calculator your Pokémon GO password.
• Do not install software that asks to automate game access.
• Do not authorize an unfamiliar service to read your account.
• Prefer calculators that work from manually entered data.

What to evaluate before investing

4. Review the Stardust, Candy, and XL Candy cost.
5. Check the final CP before confirming power-ups for a capped league.
