How to Get Dragonite, Snorlax, Gyarados, and Other Rare Pokémon

Dragonite, Snorlax, Gyarados, and other sought-after Pokémon do not have permanent guaranteed spawn locations. Their availability changes with seasons, events, raids, research, and Egg pools. For Dragonite and Gyarados, collecting Candy for an evolution is usually more dependable than waiting for the fully evolved form to appear.

Check availability before hunting

Open the in-game Today view, Nearby screen, current raid list, research rewards, and Egg hatch list. A species mentioned in an old guide may have moved to a different pool or may be temporarily unavailable. Do not travel to a shopping center, beach, or park based only on a historical spawn claim.

Porygon

Porygon can appear through wild events, research, raids, and Eggs when it is included in the active rotation. Events featuring Normal-type Pokémon or the Porygon family are the best time to collect Candy and high-quality examples.

Before incubating Eggs specifically for Porygon, tap the Egg and check its possible hatch list. Egg contents change, so an old 5 km or 10 km claim is not enough.

Dragonair

The reliable route to Dragonair is to catch Dratini and evolve it with Dratini Candy. Dratini availability improves during certain events, research tasks, raids, and other rotating features. Water-adjacent locations may influence some spawn patterns, but they do not guarantee Dragonair.

Use Pinap or Silver Pinap Berries when extra Candy matters and the encounter is secure enough. Trading unwanted Dratini can also provide Candy and a new IV roll under the game's trade rules.

Dragonite

Dragonite can occasionally appear in the wild or in a featured battle or event, but evolving Dratini through Dragonair is the predictable route. Save enough Candy for both evolution stages and check the available moves before investing Stardust.

If a wild Dragonite appears, use a strong suitable ball, a Golden Razz Berry when catch security is the priority, and a controlled curveball. Consider the Master Ball only for an encounter important enough to justify using a very limited item; a rare species name alone does not make every encounter worth it.

Snorlax

Snorlax is sometimes available as a rare wild spawn and may rotate through raids, research, events, or Eggs. Event announcements and the current encounter pool are more dependable than searching a fixed residential area.

Snorlax can serve different roles depending on its moves and battle format. Appraise it, check the moveset, and decide the role before spending Candy or Stardust.

Gyarados

Evolving Magikarp is the standard way to obtain Gyarados and requires 400 Magikarp Candy. Magikarp often becomes easier to collect during water-themed events, boosted spawn periods, research, or other rotations.

Set Magikarp as your buddy for additional Candy, use Pinap Berries on catches when appropriate, and keep high-priority Magikarp for appraisal or PvP evaluation. Gyarados itself can also appear through wild or battle features when included in an event.

Pikachu

Pikachu frequently appears in events, including costumed forms, and may also be available through wild spawns or research. Check event details carefully because a costume, Shiny availability, or move may be tied to one encounter method.

The well-known starter trick applies only during the initial new-account encounter: repeatedly walk away from Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle until Pikachu joins the choices. It is not a general method for an established account, and reinstalling the app does not reset server-side account progress.

Catch a rare encounter without wasting throws

1. Clear item and Pokémon storage before the hunt.
2. Select a ball that matches the encounter's value and difficulty.
3. Use a Razz, Golden Razz, or Silver Pinap Berry based on the catch-versus-Candy goal.
4. Throw a curveball and aim for the smallest accuracy circle you can hit consistently.
5. Time the ball to land after the Pokémon finishes attacking.

Build a dependable plan

Rotations change more quickly than the basic evolution routes. Verify what is available now, then focus Candy, passes, Incubators, and walking time on the source that can actually produce the target.
