How to Catch Pokémon More Reliably in Pokémon GO

No throw can guarantee a catch in Pokémon GO, but you can improve the odds by combining a suitable ball, the right Berry, a curveball, and an accurate Nice, Great, or Excellent hit. The colored target ring indicates difficulty, while its size determines the accuracy bonus available when the ball lands.

1. Learn the two catch circles

The fixed outer circle marks the target area. The colored inner circle repeatedly shrinks and resets while you hold the ball. If the ball lands inside the colored circle, the game awards an accuracy grade based on its size:

• Nice: the colored circle is relatively large.
• Great: the circle is smaller.
• Excellent: the circle is smallest and demands the most precision.

A smaller circle does not make the throw easier; it makes the target more difficult but provides a stronger catch bonus when hit. Aim for the smallest circle size you can land consistently rather than missing repeatedly while chasing an Excellent throw.

The ring color is a separate clue. Green generally indicates an easier current catch, while yellow, orange, and red indicate increasing difficulty. The color can improve after selecting a stronger ball or an appropriate Berry.

2. Throw a curveball

Press and spin the ball until it sparkles, then release it along a curved path. Curveballs provide an additional catch modifier and an XP bonus, making them worth learning.

Practice on common Pokémon first. Use the same spin direction repeatedly so the required release point becomes predictable. The goal is a controlled curve that reaches the center, not the widest possible arc.

3. Time the Pokémon's attack

Pokémon can jump or attack and knock away a ball. Observe its animation pattern before throwing. A reliable method is to set the desired circle size, wait for the attack, then release the curveball so it lands just after the attack finishes.

This “circle lock” timing reduces wasted throws, but different species stand at different distances and have different animations. Adjust the release point after watching one full cycle.

4. Choose the right ball

Use a standard Poké Ball for routine catches and a stronger ball when the ring color, rarity, CP, or personal value justifies it. Great Balls and Ultra Balls improve the catch attempt compared with the basic ball.

Once a thrown ball misses or is knocked away, it is normally consumed; you cannot reliably pick it up from the ground and reuse it. Good timing is therefore the real way to conserve balls.

5. Match the Berry to the goal

• Razz Berry: improves the chance of catching the Pokémon.
• Golden Razz Berry: provides a stronger catch benefit and is useful for high-priority encounters.
• Nanab Berry: calms movement, making an accurate throw easier.
• Pinap Berry: increases Candy but does not primarily improve the catch chance.
• Silver Pinap Berry: combines extra Candy with a catch benefit.

You can apply only one active Berry effect at a time. If the Pokémon breaks out, feed another Berry before the next attempt when needed.

6. Use non-AR mode for steadier aiming

Turning off AR places the Pokémon against the game's standard encounter background and removes the need to move the phone camera to keep the target centered. This often makes distance and throw timing easier to judge.

AR mode can be enjoyable and is useful for photos, but it is not required for an effective catch. Choose the view that lets you throw most consistently and safely.

7. Improve catch bonuses over time

Catching many Pokémon of the same types advances type medals, which can contribute to future catch attempts for those types. Consistent catching practice therefore improves both your technique and account bonuses.
