Which Pokémon GO Team Should You Choose?

Pokémon GO asks you to join one of three teams: Instinct (yellow), Mystic (blue), or Valor (red). Your choice mainly affects how you cooperate with teammates and compete for Gyms. It does not determine which Pokémon you can catch or make your Pokémon inherently stronger.

If friends in your area play regularly, joining their team can make Gym play more convenient. Otherwise, choose the leader, color, or theme you prefer; there is no universally “best” team.

What your team choice affects

• Friendly Gyms: You can place a defender in a Gym controlled by your team when space is available, and you can feed Berries to its defenders.
• Rival Gyms: You battle Pokémon placed by the other two teams to reduce their motivation and take control.
• Playing with friends: Teammates can defend the same Gym, although Trainers from different teams can still raid, trade, battle, and participate in many other features together.

Team population varies by location. A popular local team may have more friendly Gyms but fewer open defender slots; a smaller team may offer more opposing Gyms to battle. Neither situation guarantees better rewards.

Team Instinct: yellow

Team Instinct is led by Spark and represented by the Legendary Pokémon Zapdos. Its theme emphasizes trusting a Pokémon's instincts and the role of hatching.

Team Mystic: blue

Team Mystic is led by Blanche and represented by Articuno. Its theme centers on calm analysis, Pokémon evolution, and understanding why Pokémon develop as they do.

Team Valor: red

Team Valor is led by Candela and represented by Moltres. Its theme focuses on training, strength, and the bond between Trainers and Pokémon.

How to make the decision

1. Ask regular playing partners which team they use if you want to defend Gyms together.
2. Look at nearby Gyms over several days to understand the local balance.
3. Consider whether you prefer frequent rival Gyms to battle or more friendly Gyms to support.
4. If those factors do not matter, pick the team identity you like most.

Can you change teams later?

Yes. The old claim that team choice is permanent is no longer correct. Pokémon GO offers a Team Medallion in the in-game Shop, subject to the game's current purchase and cooldown rules. Before using it, read the item description carefully and make sure the new team is the one you want.

A team change does not replace the need to rebuild control of local Gyms. If one of your Pokémon is defending a Gym when you switch, check the current in-game guidance for how that defender and its earned rewards will be handled.
