Facebook can now authenticate two elements without a phone number

Facebook recently said it has changed the way to set up 2-factor authentication (2FA). The new process will make this happen faster without having to register a phone number.

Previously required a phone number for two-factor authentication, Facebook now accepts applications like Duo Security and Google Authenticator. The process is also streamlined more simply.

This update came a few months after Facebook admitted there was an error in its 2FA system, making SMS messages unrelated to security sent to user phones. Facebook uses the automatic number 362-65 as its 2-factor authentication number, which sends Facebook notifications via SMS to users without approval.

Authentication application is also a safer option to use phones because SMS is the target of many 2FA hacks.

To set up 2FA on Facebook, visit the Settings page and click Security and Login, then use Use two-factor authentication, choose to use the phone or the authentication application.
