Chat, Google's all-new messaging app that replaces Android Message and SMS
Google is about to launch a completely new messaging application for Android, completely replacing SMS and also a challenger for Apple iMessage. The application is called simply 'Chat' and will be available for free on Android operating systems.
Unlike previous applications, Google wants users to ignore SMS messages and use Chat as a single application, both for texting, chatting, chatting, calling and video calls.
To that end, Google has quietly called on major mobile operators to adopt a new technology called Rich Communication Services (RCS). Messages between Chat users will be sent through this RCS protocol, which saves data by only spending a few bytes for a message.
If the user does not have an Internet connection, or sends a chat message to people who do not use Chat, the application can automatically identify and send traditional SMS messages.
Basically, Chat's operation method is very similar to iMessage but there are more improvements and Apple does not use RCS protocol. Chat supports many features of modern applications such as group chat support, allowing sharing high-resolution images and videos, displaying icons while editing reply messages.
Google also said that Chat will continue to integrate more new features such as sending GIF images, sending funny stickers . And most likely, a chat version for computers will be developed in the future.
Chat promises to be the best messaging app for all Android users and will become a worthy rival of Apple iMessage. But for Chat to be widely used around the world, a major obstacle is that local operators must support the RCS protocol. Currently, the new Google talks with 55 major carriers in the world.
To focus on Chat, Google has halted development of other chat apps, Google Wave, Google Voice, Google Buzz, Gchat, and Google Space, all of which have been deactivated. And it is possible that Allo and Duo applications will also be killed after Chat is released.
Google is expected to officially launch Chat application in the second half of this year. Whether users in Vietnam can experience this great application is still a big question.
