Windows 10 problems are easier to solve when you record the exact symptom and error code, then test one reversible change at a time. Back up important files before repair work. Standard Windows 10 support ended in October 2025, so use Windows 11 on compatible hardware or an applicable Extended Security Updates path.

Before applying a fix
- Note what changed immediately before the failure.
- Restart once and disconnect nonessential peripherals.
- Check free storage and Windows Update history.
- Record stop codes, Device Manager codes, and Reliability Monitor events.
- Save the BitLocker recovery key before changing boot or recovery settings.
Startup and display problems
| Problem | First checks |
|---|---|
| Cannot reach the desktop | Disconnect peripherals, try Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then Safe Mode or Startup Repair. |
| Preparing Automatic Repair loop | Let one cycle finish, open Windows Recovery, try Startup Repair, uninstall the latest update, or use System Restore. |
| Blue screen | Record the stop code and named driver, remove recent hardware or drivers, and run memory/storage diagnostics. |
| Black screen | Check monitor input and cables, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B, test another display, then Safe Mode. |
| Error 0xc00000e | Disconnect added drives, confirm the boot disk in UEFI, and run Startup Repair from trusted Windows media. |
Do not copy generic bootrec, BCD, or partition commands without confirming the disk layout. UEFI, BIOS, BitLocker, and multi-boot systems require different repairs. Use Windows startup troubleshooting for the exact symptom.

Update and app problems
Windows Update fails
Check the error code and update history, verify time and internet access, restart, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Clear update components or repair system files only after simpler checks. Avoid third-party patch sites.
An app will not open
Test another user account, update or repair the app under Apps settings, and check whether security software blocked it. Microsoft Store apps can be repaired or reset; desktop apps may provide their own repair installer.
“Open with” is missing or wrong
Right-click the file, choose Open with > Choose another app, or set the default under Apps. Do not add unverified registry files for a simple association problem.
Network, printer, and USB problems
No internet
Determine whether other devices are offline. Reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, restart the adapter and router if you administer it, and leave IP/DNS automatic unless the network requires fixed settings. See Wi-Fi connected without internet.
Printer not detected
Check power, paper, cable or Wi-Fi, the selected printer, and its queue. Remove duplicate offline entries and use the manufacturer's official driver. Restart Print Spooler only for a stuck Windows queue.
USB device not recognized
Test another cable, port, and computer. Inspect the port with power off. Check Device Manager and Disk Management, but do not format a drive that contains needed data.

Keyboard, headphones, and sound
Keyboard keys do not work
Test an external keyboard, check accessibility options such as Filter Keys, clean only with the laptop off, and reinstall the specific keyboard driver if Device Manager reports an error. Liquid damage needs service.
Headphones are not detected
Confirm the plug is fully inserted, select the correct output under Sound settings, test another headset, and update the audio driver from the PC maker. USB, Bluetooth, and analog headsets use different troubleshooting paths.
No sound
Check mute and per-app volume, choose the correct output, restart audio services, run the audio troubleshooter, and roll back a driver if the problem began after an update.
Low storage, freezing, and slow performance
Open Settings > System > Storage to identify large categories. Use Storage Sense and uninstall unused apps; do not manually delete Windows folders or disable the page file as a general fix. For freezes, wait briefly, use Task Manager to identify the process, check temperatures and storage health, then test a clean boot.

Repair Windows system files
If several Windows components fail, open an administrator Terminal and run DISM before SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthnsfc /scannowRestart and retest. These tools do not repair failing hardware, recover deleted files, or fix every application. Read how to interpret SFC results.
When to stop and seek repair
Stop home troubleshooting for smoke, swelling, burning smells, liquid exposure, repeated storage errors, physical port damage, or a system that cannot keep important files backed up. Also escalate if recovery prompts for an unavailable encryption key. Provide the technician with the exact symptoms and changes already tested.
