What is the best AI photo background remover?

People spend too much time manually removing backgrounds, and AI isn't always the magic it's advertised to be. After testing 11 so-called 'smart' tools, there was one that didn't completely remove edges, animal hair, or shadows.

11. Creative Fabrica

While it is possible to remove the background from a smartphone, it is better to use a computer. Here is the photo used for testing:

 

First, try Creative Fabrica's background removal tool. You can't drag and drop images from the home page; instead, you need to click the Add Your Image Here button .

 

Creative Fabrica removed most of the dog's legs, and I couldn't download the image without signing up for a free trial. These reasons mean Creative Fabrica's background removal is the worst.

10. Pixian

Pixian's background eraser removed most of the background, but it also removed most of the dog's body.

 

Photos are also scaled down if you don't pay for the service. The paid version is better than the free version, but many people don't trust it enough to pay for it.

9. Canva

Canva is a popular design tool and you get some free credits to use Canva's Background Removal feature.

 

The software erased the dog's hind legs, which was annoying. While it removed most of the background around the main subject, it still left the grass in front of the dog. Canva's software picked up more detail, but for now it's just average.

8. Photoshop

Even though Photoshop is a paid tool, it is one of the best photo editing tools. If you are using a paid tool, you may wonder if you are getting access to more advanced technology that can detect intricate details that other tools cannot. Surprisingly, Photoshop's background removal tool is one of the worst.

 

Photoshop has removed one of the dog's front paws and also removed its hind paw. Also, it doesn't touch the grass in front of the dog. While Photoshop does a good job with most of the background near the dog's body, it doesn't do a good job in a few key areas.

7. Adobe Express

Since Adobe's tools are generally great for photo editing, you might be surprised at how poorly they perform when it comes to AI background removal. Express or Photoshop would certainly be my top choice before running this test, but Express is only marginally better than Photoshop.

 

At least the software doesn't erase the dog's hindquarters, which is an improvement. However, the end result is a bit sloppy. Adobe Express doesn't cut around the edges very cleanly, and for some reason the foreground grass looks weirder in this edit than in the others.

If you are using the paid version of Adobe Express, you should expect better results.

6. Cutout.pro

Cutout.pro allows you to remove the background from your photos for free, but you need credits to download the high-resolution edited version. Once you remove the background, you can replace it with a different color if you want; while it might be useful for creating memes, it wasn't useful for this test.

The quality is pretty poor and the edit looks sloppy. Around the dog's legs, Cutout.pro doesn't remove as much grass as it should. The app does allow you to rate your edit, at least. Hopefully the app can use this information to improve the product.

5. Removebg

Next is Removebg. You don't need to sign up for an account to use the background removal tool, which makes the process simpler. Within seconds, the app has removed the background.

For a free app, this is a respectable effort. However, the grass between the dog's legs was not removed. The app may have blended this in with the animal's fur, and it's not technically a background either. So for simple edits, Removebg seems like a decent option.

One annoying thing about Removebg is that you can only download a preview unless you sign up for a paid subscription. However, you can get around this by using Canva to resize your images.

4. AI Ease

AI Ease is another free background removal tool and to access it, simply click on Remove Background on the home page. Here is the final result:

AI Ease took about 10 seconds to edit the photo, which is longer than Removebg. It did a pretty good job. It removed the grass between the dog's legs and in front of him. When exporting the photo, AI Ease lets you download a higher quality option than Removebg without having to pay a subscription fee.

3. Pixelcut

Pixelcut is the next option and you will immediately love its intuitive interface. Some background removal tools have a slight lag when uploading an image (or will open the image in a new tab). None of that is an issue with Pixelcut.

The app removed the photo background within seconds and allowed you to replace it with a new one. The results were pretty good. Besides replacing the new background, you can see various suggestions on your app toolbar.

You can download images in preview resolution without registering an account. However, you need to create a profile to download in full resolution.

2. Pixlr

People love Pixlr's regular photo editor and often use it to resize photos. So let's see if its background eraser is on the same level. The resolution is definitely higher than many of the tools used.

Pixlr left a lot of the background near the dog's body. It seems like the tool was trying to be a little too safe by not removing anything it shouldn't; but the result is a pretty sloppy edit. Also, the grass between the dog's legs was left untouched.

1. Photoroom

Photoroom is one of the best free online photo editors. The AI ​​background removal tool is impressive. This is one of the AI ​​tools that you can access without a paid subscription.

Photoroom does a pretty good job of removing most of the background around the dog, although it did encroach on the dog's fur in certain spots. While you can only download the image at a lower resolution, the quality is still pretty good. If you want, you can change the background color before saving the image. With its responsiveness, Photoroom is one of the easiest ways to remove the background from a photo.

Photoroom does the best job of all the AI ​​background removal tools we tested; none of the others were really great.
