What are the default plugins of ChatGPT?
Using ChatGPT involves more than just basic fact-finding. GPT-4, the premium model of ChatGPT, has some interesting additional plugins: DALL-E, Browsing and Code Interpreter. So how do these ChatGPT plugins work and what can you get from them?
What are the default ChatGPT plugins?
ChatGPT's 3 built-in plugins are available to all ChatGPT Plus users. ChatGPT Plus uses GPT-4, the latest LLM version of OpenAI, which comes with DALL-E 3, Code Interpreter and Browse with Bing plugins.
OpenAI started rolling out integrated plugins in March 2023. Here's a basic overview of each plugin's functionality:
- Browse with Bing: Search Bing on behalf of the user to find real-time data.
- Code Interpreter: Run, analyze, and deliver Python code in a sandbox environment.
- DALL-E: Allows creating text to images in chat using DALL-E 3.
When you open a ChatGPT Plus account, each of these plugins will be active by default, meaning you don't need to activate anything manually to use them.
How to use the standard ChatGPT plugin
Without a ChatGPT Plus account, you will not be able to access these plugins. So, consider signing up for the $20 monthly subscription if you want to overcome this hurdle.
1. Browse with Bing
To get started with Browse with Bing, make a request for real-time data or specifically make clear that you want ChatGPT to search the web for prompts.
After making the request, you will be notified that GPT is currently searching the web. It may take about 10 seconds to receive results, or longer if your connection is unstable, OpenAI's servers are overloaded, or your request contains detailed information that takes time to search.
When ChatGPT provides a response based on a web search, the source will always be provided in quotation marks (["]) at the end of the response. You can recreate the response if you are not satisfied with the original output by clicking on the circular arrow icon below the answer.
Note: ChatGPT sometimes provides fabricated or unreliable sources for its answers, so it's best to check the source before using any information provided.
It is likely that ChatGPT will not conduct web searches on data it already has access to, such as historical events. If web searching is necessary, state that clearly in your reminder.
DALL-E is a separate platform from ChatGPT, but OpenAI is also the company that created it. The latest version of DALL-E is DALL-E 3, released in August 2023. The software uses AI to generate images based on user prompts. DALL-E is a paid tool but you can use it for free with your ChatGPT Plus subscription (or access it with Microsoft Copilot)
ChatGPT Plus offers a built-in DALL-E 3 feature, allowing you to use text to create images whenever you want. Just describe the type of image you want and ChatGPT will create it on your behalf.
It may take 10 or 20 seconds for ChatGPT to generate the image, and it may take longer if there are connection problems, high server traffic, or complex topics.
Once you have your image, you can ask ChatGPT to recreate it or make changes. However, the main disadvantage of DALL-E in ChatGPT is the frequent inability to take a previous photo and edit it. You may have luck telling ChatGPT to keep the image roughly the same, except for the changes you request, but this is not guaranteed. In fact, it will probably create a completely new image.
Now, the article will require changes.
Although the author of the article asked ChatGPT to keep the image identical except for one change, it also changed almost everything else visually. Please keep this drawback in mind when using this plugin.
3. Code Interpreter
If you want to write, run or be provided with code in the Python language, ChatGPT's Code Interpreter can help. With this plugin, you can request code snippets, have ChatGPT analyze and execute the code, and enjoy the option to upload files in the chat for review.
If ChatGPT detects any errors in your code, it will notify you and provide a fix.
You can upload text files and documents for analysis in a variety of formats, including PDF, DOCX, JSON, TXT and PPTX. You can also choose from a variety of data and code formats, and even upload a JPEG image of the code in question.
After uploading the document, ChatGPT will analyze and give you an explanation.
You can also ask ChatGPT to provide Python code for the function or program you want to create. However, this is not part of the Interpreter plugin so it can be used with GPT-3.5 or GPT-4.
Make sure you run any provided code through the dedicated Python runtime engine before deploying it. ChatGPT can make mistakes, so it's best to do some checking on any data it gives you.
How to use the ChatGPT plugin on mobile devices
The process for using any of these standard plugins on the ChatGPT mobile app is the same as on the computer. Make a request according to your prompts, and as long as you're logged into your ChatGPT Plus account, the relevant plugin will become active automatically.
You can use your ChatGPT Plus account on both your computer and mobile device simultaneously.
With all these plugins on offer, the capabilities of ChatGPT will increase greatly. Whether you want to create AI art, check the weather, find online deals, or test some code, GPT-4 can help.
