According to Symantec, a US security firm, spam originated mainly from China, followed by South Korea, the United States, Thailand and Vietnam. Spam currently accounts for 78% of total e-mail globally.

However, the researchers found that the tendency to embed the exploit code directly into the source code of the message is also becoming popular. This phenomenon is called "payload poison" and appears in about 1.2% of email sent.
13.4% of this payload is Trojan, while download software and info-stealer application found in spam are 11.8% and 11.1%, respectively.
Pandex is the most popular spam program, followed by W32.IRCBot and Trojan Goldun.
