The Los Angeles Times reported that a woman in Santa Barbara County used AirTag to catch shoplifters in her neighborhood.

After dealing with several cases of items being stolen directly from her mailbox, this woman decided to try a creative solution.

She sent herself a package containing an Apple AirTag tracking device, hoping a thief would steal it.

Nathan Solis writes for the Los Angeles Times:

According to the Sheriff's Department, her mail was stolen on Monday, including the package with the tracking device. The woman showed police she was able to track the package to the 600 block of E. Sunrise Drive in Santa Maria.

According to the Sheriff's Department, police found the woman's mail, including the package with the AirTag along with potentially stolen items from more than a dozen other victims.

Many arrests have been made and perhaps this woman and her neighbors can now rest assured that their mail is safer than ever.

AirTag has proven its usefulness

AirTag has proven useful in many ways since its launch. But some uses, especially for tracking, have become truly problematic.

It's great to hear a story about AirTags being used to prevent crime, not cause it. It's not surprising to see stories like this become common. You might not think of using an AirTag as bait for thieves, but it's a great idea.
