Uncharted 5: The Sequel Nobody Knows Anything About

While, originally, it was easy to call it a rip-off of one particularly dominant adventure franchise (Tomb Raider), there's no denying the fact that Naughty Dog's Uncharted cemented itself as a standalone series a long time ago.

A combination of wanton tomb-robbing, intense action sequences, and the sometimes fractious relationship between Nathan Drake and journalist Elena Fisher arguably made for a better overall experience than the often one-dimensional Lara Croft could ever hope for.

However, Uncharted is now a relic of the gaming industry, alongside fellow skeletons like Turok, Half-Life, Twisted Metal, and many other popular series that developers seem to have forgotten about. Fortunately, though, it's unlikely that Uncharted is gone for good - even though much of the information we have about the franchise comes from the internet's rumour mill. For instance, a bit of sleuthing reveals that a brand-new Sony studio is working on something from Naughty Dog's back catalogue, possibly Uncharted.

Why are we so confident that an Uncharted 5 is in the works? Much of the faith in Uncharted's continuation stems from the size of its legacy to date. Games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Assassin's Creed, and God of War almost certainly took some inspiration from Uncharted. Similarly, Uncharted's themes of New World exploration have also cropped up outside the gaming industry, courtesy of casino company NetEnt. The slot Gonzo's Quest can be found on the safe online casino PlayStar and features a portly conquistador as its protagonist.

On the outside, Naughty Dog seemed to have gotten bored of Uncharted after the fourth mainline entry (A Thief's End), although a later spin-off was released that dispensed with Drake in favour of Uncharted 2 character Chloe Frazer. That game, entitled Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, is now six years old. Only a collection of previous Uncharted games released in 2022 has had anything to say about the franchise since then. As of their last appearance, Drake and Elena had settled into domestic bliss, with not an adventure in sight.

God of War

Via a process of elimination, the Comic Book website is fairly convinced that an Uncharted title is being produced at the new studio mentioned earlier. However, elsewhere on the web, alarm bells have been rung about the possibility of the franchise getting a reboot, something that ScreenRant described as 'pointless and pandering'. Not only are all the games playable on the PS5 but they've also stood the test of time. This would effectively mean that the originals and any potential reboot would be in competition with each other.

Far more likely is that Uncharted is trapped in the same predicament that shadowed the development of 2018's God of War, namely, whether to get rid of the original protagonist (Kratos) in favour of somebody new. 2017's Uncharted: The Lost Legacy may have been an experiment in this vein, even if the possibility of a reboot hints at a desperate desire to keep Drake around for a bit longer. In any case, with so little information available regarding the franchise's future, all we have is speculation at this stage.

Drake's adventure may well be finished. Could Chloe Frazer take up Drake's vacant mantle or is something entirely new on the cards? It could be a long wait to find out.
