How to Connect Bluetooth Headphones to an iPhone

To connect Bluetooth headphones to an iPhone, place the headphones in pairing mode, then open Settings > Bluetooth and tap their name. If they do not appear, the usual causes are that they are not discoverable, have reconnected to another device, or need to be charged or reset.

Prepare the headphones

1. Charge the headphones and, for true wireless earbuds, the case.
2. Keep them close to the iPhone while pairing.
3. Disconnect them from a phone, tablet, computer, or television they normally use.
4. Follow the model's manual to enable pairing or discovery mode.

The pairing method varies. Over-ear models often use a power or Bluetooth button, while earbuds may use a button on the case or touch controls. Wait for the model's pairing light or voice prompt rather than assuming that powering it on is enough.

A small number of older accessories request a PIN. Use the code printed in the manual, on the accessory, or in the manufacturer's support information; do not keep guessing common codes.

Connect the headphones to an iPhone

1. Put the headphones in pairing mode.
2. On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth.
3. Turn Bluetooth on and keep the page open while it scans.
4. Under Other Devices, tap the headphone name.
5. Approve any confirmation or documented PIN request. When pairing succeeds, the model appears under My Devices with a Connected status.

Choose the headphones as the audio output

If pairing succeeds but sound still comes from the iPhone, open Control Center, touch the audio destination or AirPlay control in the Now Playing panel, and select the headphones. Also check that the app is not sending audio to another AirPlay or Bluetooth device.

During calls, tap the Audio button in the Phone app to choose the iPhone speaker or connected headset. Volume can differ between media and calls, so adjust it while the relevant audio is playing.

Rename the headphones

A custom name can make a device easier to identify:

1. Connect the headphones.
2. Open Settings > Bluetooth.
3. Tap the information button next to the connected model.
4. If Name is available, tap it and enter the new name.

Temporarily disconnect or forget the device

To use the iPhone speaker without deleting the pairing, select a different audio output or tap the connected headphone name in Settings > Bluetooth. The Bluetooth button in Control Center temporarily disconnects most Bluetooth accessories, but it does not fully turn off the Bluetooth radio. To turn Bluetooth off completely, use Settings.

To remove the saved pairing, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button next to the model, and select Forget This Device. You can pair it again later. On current Apple software, forgetting an accessory may also unpair it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

If the iPhone cannot find the headphones

Work through these checks in order:

1. Confirm that the headphones are in pairing mode and still discoverable.
2. Charge them, then turn them off and on.
3. Turn off Bluetooth on other previously paired devices so they cannot take the connection.
4. On the iPhone, turn Bluetooth off and on in Settings.
5. If the model is already listed, choose Forget This Device, return it to pairing mode, and add it again.
6. Restart the iPhone.
7. Reset the headphones using the manufacturer's exact instructions, then retry.

Audio delay and connection dropouts

Bluetooth audio has some latency because sound must be encoded, transmitted, and decoded. A music stream normally hides this delay, but games, rhythm apps, and live monitoring make it easier to notice. An iPhone does not support aptX, so buying headphones solely for aptX will not reduce iPhone latency. A wired connection or a compatible low-latency USB-C receiver is more predictable for time-sensitive audio.

Can two people listen from one iPhone?

Apple's Share Audio feature can send audio to two compatible pairs of AirPods or Beats headphones from a supported iPhone or iPad. Connect the first pair, open the audio destination control from Now Playing, the Lock Screen, or Control Center, choose Share Audio, and bring the second compatible pair close to the iPhone.
