How to Use ChatGPT as a Personal Tutor: Study Mode and Prompts

ChatGPT can act as a study partner by asking diagnostic questions, explaining one step at a time, generating practice, and checking your reasoning. It works best when you provide a learning goal and source material, then require it to teach rather than immediately reveal answers.

Start with Study mode

In ChatGPT, open Tools and select Study and learn. Study mode is available on web, iOS, and Android and is designed to guide reasoning, explain concepts step by step, and check understanding.

You can also use the prompts below in a normal chat. Before beginning, tell ChatGPT:

• The subject and exact skill you want to learn
• Your current level and what you already understand
• Your goal, deadline, and available study time
• The textbook, syllabus, notes, or examples the lesson should follow
• Whether you want hints, worked examples, quizzes, or exam-style questions

A reusable personal-tutor prompt

Act as my tutor for [subject or skill].

My current level: [level and prior knowledge]
My goal: [specific outcome]
Deadline or schedule: [date or time available]
Source material: [paste notes or attach the relevant file]

First, ask 3-5 short questions to assess my starting point. Then create a lesson plan that focuses on the prerequisites and skills I need for the goal.

Teach one concept at a time. Use a short explanation, one worked example, and one question for me to answer. Do not reveal the answer immediately. If I make a mistake, identify the exact step that failed, give a hint, and let me try again.

After each section, ask me to explain the idea in my own words. At the end, give me a mixed practice set and a brief review schedule. Distinguish facts from assumptions and cite reliable sources for current or disputed information.

Replace every bracketed section. “Teach me chemistry” is broad; “help me balance Grade 10 chemical equations before Friday's quiz” gives the tutor a useful target.

Prompt 1: Build a learning path

Use this when you are beginning a language, software tool, school subject, or professional skill:

I want to learn [topic] from [current level] to [target ability].

Ask what I already know, then map the prerequisites and create a sequence of small modules. For each module include:
- the learning objective
- the minimum explanation needed
- one worked example
- deliberate practice
- common mistakes
- a mastery check
- what to review later

I can study [time] per [day/week], and my deadline is [date]. Do not invent a precise completion estimate; explain what progress is realistic and adjust the plan based on my quiz results.

Avoid asking for the “20% that produces 80% of results” unless the skill genuinely has a clear high-value core. A better plan identifies prerequisites and tests whether you have mastered them.

Prompt 2: Explain with the Feynman technique

The Feynman technique tests understanding by requiring a simple explanation and exposing unclear steps.

Help me understand [topic] using the Feynman technique.

1. Ask me to explain the topic in plain language first.
2. Identify gaps, vague words, and unsupported steps in my explanation.
3. Explain only the missing parts with a concrete example.
4. Ask me to explain it again without jargon.
5. Increase the difficulty only after I can apply the idea to a new example.

Do not confuse a simple analogy with the full technical model. Point out where each analogy stops being accurate.

This is useful for concepts such as recursion, inflation, electricity, grammar, and probability. It is less useful if you have not yet learned the prerequisite vocabulary, so let the tutor fill those gaps first.

Prompt 3: Use Socratic questions

Be a Socratic tutor for [problem or skill]. Do not solve it for me at the start.

Ask one focused question at a time. Use my answer to decide the next question. If I am stuck, give the smallest useful hint and ask me to continue. Challenge assumptions, but tell me directly when a factual premise is wrong.

When I reach a solution, ask me to justify every step, test an edge case, and solve a similar problem without help. Finish with feedback on what I understood and what I should practice next.

This format is effective for mathematics, programming, logic, essay arguments, and case analysis because it makes the learner produce the reasoning.

Prompt 4: Practice a language

Be my [language] conversation tutor at [level].

Choose a realistic scenario: [restaurant, interview, travel, meeting]. Keep the conversation mostly in [language], but explain corrections in [preferred language].

After each of my replies:
- correct only the most important errors
- show a natural alternative
- explain one grammar or pronunciation point
- ask the next question

At the end, list five phrases to review and quiz me on them in a different context.

For pronunciation, ask for syllable stress and a phonetic hint, then compare with audio from a reliable dictionary or native-speaker source. Text alone cannot fully evaluate accent or sound quality.

Prompt 5: Prepare for an exam

Use only the attached syllabus and notes to help me prepare for [exam].

Create a diagnostic quiz that samples every listed objective. Do not show answers until I submit mine. Score each objective separately, explain errors with references to the source, and build a review plan weighted toward my weakest areas.

Include retrieval practice, mixed problems, and one timed mock section. Do not add topics that are outside the syllabus unless you label them as optional background.

How to get useful feedback

• Show your attempt, not only the question.
• Ask which step is wrong and why instead of requesting the final answer.
• Request a new example with different numbers or context.
• Ask for a counterexample to test a rule.
• Have ChatGPT grade against a rubric you provide.
• Keep an error log containing the mistake, cause, correction, and a follow-up problem.

Verify what the tutor tells you

ChatGPT can make errors, invent citations, or confidently apply the wrong method. For important work:

• Use your textbook, instructor materials, official documentation, or primary sources as the authority.
• Check calculations independently and substitute answers back into the problem.
• Open cited sources and confirm they support the claim.
• Ask ChatGPT to state uncertainty and separate sourced facts from inference.
• Consult a teacher or qualified professional for high-stakes medical, legal, financial, or safety questions.

Protect learning and privacy

Do not upload school records, personal identifiers, confidential workplace material, or another person's private work unless you are authorized to do so. Follow your course's rules on AI assistance and submit your own reasoning. The goal of a tutor is to make you less dependent on help over time, not to produce answers you cannot explain.
