Microsoft officially confirms Windows 11 version 25H2 will be released later this year

Microsoft has just released Dev and Beta builds for Windows 11 recently. While the updates have almost the same changelog, one notable point is that Microsoft has officially confirmed that Dev channel users will see Windows 11, version 25H2 information in Settings > System > About and the winver tool from now on. While there have been some rumors before, this is the first time Microsoft has officially confirmed the next Windows 11 feature update.

25H2 Update Details

In a more detailed blog post, Microsoft has provided recommendations for organizations on how to prepare for the arrival of Windows 11 version 25H2. The Redmond-based tech giant notes that versions 24H2 and 25H2 are part of the same Windows servicing branch, which means the upgrade process should be fairly quick thanks to the presence of activation packages (eKBs).

For those who don't know, activation packs are disabled codes containing new features that Microsoft will activate when upgrading the version. This means that PCs running Windows 11 version 24H2 can upgrade to 25H2 with just a reboot, because the new code is already available, just needs to be activated.

However, if your PC is running Windows 11 24H2, it's worth noting that this version isn't in the same servicing branch as 25H2. In other words, you'll have to go through the regular upgrade process via Windows Update or Windows Autopatch, which can take longer and require multiple reboots.

Support timeline for version 25H2

As usual, the Enterprise edition of Windows 11 25H2 will receive 36 months of support from the date of release, while the Pro and Home editions will be supported for 24 months.

While Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11, version 25H2 will begin rolling out later this year, the company has yet to announce a specific official release date.

In short:

  1. 25H2 has been confirmed, will launch late 2024.
  2. Upgrading from 24H2 to 25H2 will be very fast thanks to the activation package.
  3. PCs running older versions will take longer to upgrade.
  4. Enterprise: 36 months support | Pro/Home: 24 months.
