Learn about DDR6 RAM
DDR6 will be faster and use MSAP technologies, but what does that mean and how long will DDR5 be in the spotlight? Here's what's known so far, including when DDR6 is slated to be released, what speeds are expected, and what will be required to run DDR6 RAM.
When is DDR6 coming out?
As of February 2023, DDR6 is confirmed to be in development, with Samsung announcing at Tech Day that DDR6 is expected to appear as a module for commercial use in 2025. ensuring the lifecycle for DDR5 is quite long, especially considering that DDR6 will need to be integrated into RAM sticks before it can be used at the consumer level.
Remember that one of the reasons to upgrade the motherboard is so you can use DDR5 RAM.
What can be expected from DDR6 RAM?
Once you can buy DDR6 RAM, what performance will you get from it?
DDR6 Speed
As DDR RAM evolves with each version, the usual trend is that with each version, the speed will double. DDR5 operates at a maximum data rate of 51.2 Gigabytes per second on two channels with each module, however, the speed of JEDEC modules is 6,400 MBps, with faster modules being released. operating throughout the life of the DDR5.
DDR6 is expected to launch with a maximum data rate of 12,800MBps on JEDEC modules and 17,000MBps when overclocked. These speeds are expected to increase over the life of DDR6. By the way, don't forget that DDR is just one of the terms you need to know about RAM.
New technology: MSAP
Samsung's DDR6 announcement also includes a statement about the inclusion of MSAP technology in DDR6 RAM modules. MSAP stands for Modified Semi Additive Process and has been used in several brands of DDR5 RAM. MSAP allows manufacturers to create modules with better circuitry, allowing for faster speeds by covering the gaps. This results in faster transfers and better connections between circuits.
DDR6 will be the future standard
DDR6 is still in its infancy, as it is at least a year away from completion and will have to wait 2 years before commercial release. However, when DDR6 arrives, we can expect to experience twice the speed of the current standard. And in the case of Samsung, the company also has new MSAP technology.
You will need to upgrade your motherboard to support the new generation of DDR, but for now, the lifecycle of DDR5 is still quite long.
