iPhone is about to stop being boring

On social network X, analyst Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) said that the iPhone 17 Plus, expected to launch in 2025, will have a smaller screen than the iPhone 15 Plus.

Currently, the iPhone 15 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen, equivalent to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. If the rumors are accurate, the difference between the iPhone Plus and Pro Max series will widen from 2025.

With the iPhone 16 models, rumors from MacRumors say the screen size of the iPhone 16 Pro will increase from 6.1 to 6.3 inches, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will increase from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 still retain 6.1 inches.

That means the iPhone screen size can change for 2 consecutive years. According to CNET , this move is not too surprising because iPhones have regularly changed screen sizes over the years, since 2014.

It is unclear why Apple shrunk the iPhone 17 Plus screen. In fact, this model is for those who like the large screen of Pro Max but have a tight budget, or do not need high-end features.

Currently, iPhone models are clearly divided with the standard line priced at 800 USD, the Plus line with a large screen priced at 900 USD. Next, the high-end Pro and Pro Max (large screen) models start at $1,000 and $1,100, respectively.

This formula has been applied by Apple since 2021, after eliminating the 5.4-inch iPhone mini. Despite receiving some positive reviews, this model was said to be unsuccessful in terms of sales, as users gradually favored large screens.

Of course, because there's still more than a year left, MacRumors emphasizes that Apple's iPhone 17 plans could change.

In addition to the iPhone 17 Plus screen size, Young also mentioned the 12.9-inch iPad Air. Specifically, this tablet model is expected to be equipped with mini-LED screen technology similar to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

"This will help Apple use up the leftover panel from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro mini-LED, which consumes less energy than the edge backlight of LCD," Young emphasized.

In addition to saving battery, 9to5Mac said the benefits of mini-LED also come from contrast, especially when watching videos because this technology gives deeper blacks than LCD, but is not as expensive as OLED.
